Chapter 3 - The Price of DignityThe question hit me like an iron blade thrust directly into my ribs.

I raised my head slowly, the shame vanishing, replaced by a sudden, hot wave of pure, unadulterated anger that flared behind my eyes.

"No, Mr. Moretti," I said, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp, clear line that vibrated through the quiet vehicle. "That isn't the price of my dignity. That is the price of my brother's physical therapy sessions for the next three weeks. That is the price of my prescription co-pays. That is the price of keeping a roof over our heads when my bank account has forty-three dollars left in it."

Adrian went completely, breathlessly still.

He didn't pull away. He set his crystal glass down in the illuminated cup holder, leaning forward slightly, his tall, imposing six-foot-three frame casting a long, intoxicating shadow over the leather cabin.

"Your brother," Adrian repeated softly, his storm-gray eyes locked onto mine with a sudden, intense focus.

"His name is Leo," I rasped out, my hazel eyes shining with unshed tears of fierce, maternal devotion. "He's seventeen. A drunk driver struck his school bus three years ago. I work double shifts at the bar, I count tips, and I swallow cruel comments from arrogant men every single night so I can pay for his care. So when someone placed five hundred dollars on a table... I didn't see a crime boss, Mr. Moretti. I saw my brother's future."

Adrian stared at me for five long seconds.

For the first time since I had approached his booth, I saw the unyielding, icy mask of the city's most feared mafia Don fracture slightly, revealing a deep, terrifyingly intense intrigue beneath it.

"And your coworkers?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping an octave into a low, velvet register. "The ones who placed the dare? The ones who laughed while you walked toward me?"

"They're ignorant," I replied deadpan. "They think making a woman like me feel small makes them feel bigger."

A dark, breathtaking smile touched the corners of Adrian's sharp lips—a look of pure, sovereign amusement that made my pulse take a wild, dangerous leap against my ribs.

"A woman like you, Mara?" Adrian murmured softly, reaching out his broad, calloused hand.

Before I could flinch, his long fingers reached out, gently, reverently touching the side of my face, his thumb stroking my cheekbone with an unexpected, agonizing tenderness that made my breath hitch in my throat.

"A woman with curves built like a goddess, eyes that hold zero lies, and a heart brave enough to kiss a monster to protect her family?" Adrian whispered into the quiet air.

My breath caught completely in my throat. I stared at him, my hazel eyes wide, speech-bound by the intense, heat-filled devotion burning in his gray eyes.

"They didn't make you feel small, Mara," Adrian promised, his thumb wiping a stray raindrop from my lip. "They just proved how blind they truly are."

He turned to the partition window, tapping the glass once.

"Leo," Adrian commanded flatly.

May you like

"Yes, Don Moretti?" Leo's voice came through the speaker.

"Drive us to the Moretti Estate on Beacon Hill," Adrian ordered, his dark eyes never leaving my face. "And have Dr. Vance prepare the medical transport trust records for Miss Bellamy's brother by midnight."
