Chapter 2 - The Web of St. Catherine’sBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the Gallagher estate was on absolute, high-level lockdown.

Heavy iron security gates were sealed shut, six additional armed operators in dark suits patrolled the perimeter, and Marco—Desmond’s primary intelligence officer—sat inside the executive study displaying encrypted financial ledgers across three wide monitors.
I sat in a plush leather armchair beside Desmond’s wheelchair, holding a warm mug of black coffee, my mind spinning as the dark truth of my uncle's life was exposed layer by layer.
"Your uncle isn't just a chief of medicine, Clara," Marco explained, tapping a key on the laptop. "For five years, Dr. Arthur Vance has been using Apex Healthcare Solutions as a money-laundering front for secondary syndicate operations in South Chicago. Six months ago, Desmond discovered the pharmaceutical diversions happening at St. Catherine’s and threatened to freeze the agency's banking licenses."
"So Arthur planted the bomb under Desmond's car," I realized, horror settling heavy in my stomach. "He tried to eliminate Desmond before the audit went public."
"And when the bomb failed to kill him," Desmond added, his baritone voice calm, smooth, and lethal, "Arthur spent six months sending compromised caregivers to this house to monitor my recovery, hoping I would remain a broken recluse inside these walls forever."
He looked over at me, his icy blue eyes holding mine with an intense, unshakeable heat.
"Until you walked through the gates with a coffee-stained scrub top and an attitude," Desmond murmured softly.
"I didn't know he was using me, Desmond," I whispered, my fingers tightening around my coffee mug. "My whole life... I thought my uncle was a savior. He paid for my mother's hospice care. He put me through nursing school."
"He put you through nursing school so he could use your clean license as a cover, Clara," Desmond said gently, reaching out his broad hand to cover mine over the armrest. His touch was warm, solid, and surprisingly tender. "He didn't count on you having a mind of your own."
A quiet knock sounded at the study door. Frankie stepped inside, holding a secure satellite phone.
"Boss," Frankie reported, his voice tight. "Dr. Arthur Vance just called the estate line. He's asking to speak with Clara. He says he needs her to return to St. Catherine’s immediately for an emergency shift."
The atmosphere in the room instantly dropped below zero.
Desmond didn't panic. He leaned back in his wheelchair, his sharp jaw set tight, his dark eyes fixing on me with a calculating, sovereign focus.
"He knows the bomber was captured, Clara," Desmond revealed. "He's panicking. He wants you back at the hospital so he can use you as leverage against me."
May you like
I swallowed hard, looking at Desmond’s broad shoulders, then at his paralyzed legs covered by clean trousers, and finally back into his storm-blue eyes.
"Then let him think I'm coming back," I declared, my voice rising with a sudden, fierce resolve that made Frankie raise his eyebrows. "Set up the meeting, Frankie. It's time my uncle answered to his nurse."
