Chapter 4 - THE QUEEN'S MOVEHe built a cage of iron and blood to keep me quiet. He never realized that I was learning how to pick the lock the entire time.

"Hold your fire!" Vincenzo barked at his men, his voice tight with sudden panic. "Nobody shoot!"

The old mafia Don stared at me with newfound hatred. He had spent fifty years dominating men through fear, but he was facing a woman who was entirely unbothered by his reputation.

"You're insane, girl," Vincenzo sneered, backing toward the high double doors of the warehouse exit. "Just like your father."

"My father was an honest craftsman," I replied, stepping forward, forcing the four mercenaries to retreat step-by-step as diesel mist continued to rain down around us. "You are just a parasite living off the blood of better men."

Alessandro moved silently through the shadows behind his father's men like a ghost. Without the threat of gunfire, he relied on pure, brutal efficiency.

CRACK.

Alessandro stepped out from the darkness behind the rearmost mercenary, grabbing the man's helmet and twisting his neck in one fluid, violent motion. Before the second guard could react, Alessandro slammed a heavy steel pipe across the man's throat, dropping him instantly to the floor without making a sound.

Vincenzo turned just in time to see his two remaining bodyguards being dismantled in the dark.

"Alessandro!" Vincenzo gasped, reaching into his coat for a suppressed blade.

Alessandro didn't give him the chance. He closed the distance like a lunging panther, grabbing his father by the throat and slamming him violently against the brick wall of the warehouse. The impact shook dust from the ceiling.

"It's over, Old Man," Alessandro growled, his hand tightening around Vincenzo's neck, lifting the elderly boss slightly off his feet. "You tried to butcher my wife. You tried to sell our legacy to the Morettis. Your time is done."

Vincenzo clawed desperately at Alessandro’s arm, his face turning purple. "You... you can't... kill me..." he choked out. "The Commission... will destroy you..."

"The Commission already knows," I said, stepping up next to Alessandro. I pulled out my phone and held up the screen. The call was active, displaying an encrypted conference line connected to the four major heads of the city's ruling families.

"They've been listening to this entire conversation, Vincenzo," I revealed coldly. "Maso patched this line through fifteen minutes ago. They heard you admit to making secret deals with the Morettis and trying to wipe out your own family."

From the phone's speaker, a gravelly, aged voice echoed softly: "Vincenzo Romano... you have violated the oath. You are stripped of your seat."

Vincenzo’s eyes went wide with ultimate defeat. The very council he had sought to manipulate had just pronounced his death sentence.

Alessandro looked at me, a profound look of awe and disbelief in his dark eyes. I wasn't just surviving his world—I was mastering it.

With a cold, dismissive grunt, Alessandro hurled his father onto the wet concrete floor. "Maso will be here in two minutes to collect you for the Commission, Father. Pray they are as merciful as I am."

Alessandro turned away from his fallen father and walked toward me. The danger seemed to evaporate, leaving only the raw, electric tension between the two of us.

"You called the Commission?" he asked softly, looking at me as if seeing me clearly for the very first time.

"I called Maso while you were playing hero," I said, handing him his Glock back. "I told you, Alessandro. I'm not a victim anymore. You don't get to make decisions for me."

He stared down at his empty hands, then up at my face. "I was trying to keep your hands clean, Maya. I wanted you to walk away into the sunlight, untainted by the filth of my life."

"My hands were dirty the day I married you!" I yelled, tears finally spilling over my lashes, hot against the cold damp air. "I didn't care about the dark world you lived in, Alessandro! I cared that you locked me out of it! You made me feel small, weak, and replaceable! You let me think you tossed me aside for some young girl, when all I ever wanted was for you to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me!"

Alessandro took a step closer, his breath ragged. He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping my face, wiping away the tears with his thumb. This time, I didn't pull away.

"I was terrified," he whispered, his voice trembling with a vulnerability he had hidden his entire life. "I was terrified that if you saw the monster I had to be to survive this life, you would look at me with disgust. I thought if I acted like a cold bastard, it would be easier for you to leave me when the end came."

"You idiot," I sobbed, leaning into his touch despite my anger. "I married the monster because I thought he would protect me. I didn't know he was trying to commit suicide to save me."

He pressed his forehead against mine, his arms wrapping tightly around my waist, pulling me against his broad chest as if he were a drowning man clinging to his only lifeline.

"I love you, Maya," he breathed into my hair. "God forgive me, I have loved you since the day you looked into my eyes at your father's shop and didn't flinch."

Before I could answer, a lone gun click echoed from behind us.

Don Vincenzo, blood dripping from his nose, was crawling on the floor, holding a small derringer pistol he had hidden in his boot.

And it was aimed directly at my back.
