Chapter 2 - THE ENEMY OF MY HUSBANDMy husband built an empire on fear and silence. He thought I was just the fragile girl who polished his diamonds. He forgot that to shape gold, you first have to burn it in the fire.

The dockside safehouse was an abandoned fish-packing warehouse, reeking of salt water, diesel fuel, and rusted iron. Fog rolled off the Atlantic, obscuring the horizon in a ghost-like haze.
Inside a small, fluorescent-lit office room tucked in the back of the warehouse, Mia lay on a cot, wrapped in heavy thermal blankets. Her face was pale, almost translucent, but her eyes were open. Her left hand was heavily bandaged where her ring finger used to be.
When I stepped into the room, her chest heaved with a sharp intake of air.
"Maya..." she rasped, her voice torn from screaming. "I'm... I'm sorry. I didn't want to go to your party. They threatened my brother..."
I sat down on the metal folding chair beside her bed and gently placed a warm hand on her forehead. "Shh. Don't apologize. You were a captive, Mia. I know what it feels like to be trapped in a glass cage built by the Romanos."
"Alessandro..." she coughed, wincing at the pain in her ribs. "He tried to protect me in his own sick way. He kept me hidden in the estate's east wing for three weeks. He was trying to trade me back to my father to secure an alliance against Vincenzo. But Vincenzo found out. Vincenzo wants a war, Maya. He wants the city to burn so he can take total power back from Alessandro."
I leaned in closer. "Why the ring, Mia? Why did Vincenzo's men cut off your finger for a ring?"
Mia’s dark eyes locked onto mine with terrifying intensity. "Because it’s not just a ring, Maya. Look at the diamond. Look inside the setting."
My heart hammered against my ribs. I pulled the ring from my pocket. I had worn this piece of jewelry for four years. My father had carved the band, but Alessandro had provided the primary central stone—a massive, flawless 8-carat black-tinted diamond known as the Nocturne.
I reached into my bag, pulling out my jeweler's loupe, the single magnifying lens I had brought from the shop. I adjusted the glass over my eye and held the bloody ring under the harsh fluorescent bulb.
I zoomed in on the underside of the main setting, where the diamond sat secured by four platinum prongs.
There, etched in microscopic micro-laser typography beneath the pavilion of the stone, was not a serial number or a maker's mark.
It was a string of alphanumeric characters. An encrypted ledger key for cold-storage cryptocurrency accounts and Swiss bank routing numbers—the entire off-the-books treasury of the Romano Empire. Billions of dollars.
My breath hitched. "Alessandro didn't give me a wedding ring. He gave me the entire syndicate's vault."
"He knew his father was treacherous," Mia whispered. "He hid the entire family wealth on your finger, knowing Vincenzo would never look at a 'useless' wife for something so valuable. But Vincenzo figured it out yesterday. That’s why he tried to take it from me at the party, and when you gave it to me, he hunted me down."
The iron door of the warehouse slammed open, echoing through the empty building like a gunshot.
Leah pulled her gun, standing in front of the cot. "Someone's here!"
Heavy footsteps echoed against the concrete floor. Through the dirty glass window of the office, I saw a tall, looming figure emerging from the fog. Tailored black suit. Dark coat draped over broad shoulders. Dark, piercing eyes that possessed the cold stillness of an apex predator.
Alessandro Romano.
He was alone. No bodyguards. His tie was loosened, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked like a man who had walked through hell and wasn't finished yet.
"Stay back, Boss!" Leah yelled through the open doorway, aiming her pistol directly at his chest. "You bring nothing but death everywhere you go!"
Alessandro didn't even look at the gun. His eyes swept past Leah, past the cot, and locked onto me.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The air between us cracked with unspoken fury, betrayal, and a strange, agonizing history.
"Maya," he said. His voice was low, rough, stripped of the smooth arrogance he had displayed at the birthday dinner. "Put the gun down, Leah. I'm not here to fight."
"You used me, Alessandro," I said, rising slowly from the chair. My hand was buried deep in my coat pocket, fingers wrapped around the heavy brass hammer. "You brought this girl to my birthday, mocked my dignity in front of the entire mafia council, and let everyone think I was a pathetic, discarded woman."
Alessandro took a step forward, stopping just at the threshold of the room. "If I made you look like an accomplice, Vincenzo would have had you assassinated that very night. I needed you out of the house. I needed you angry. I needed you to leave me, Maya!"
"By humiliating me?!" I shouted, my composure finally shattering. "You could have told me! You could have trusted me!"
"If you knew, you would have tried to play along! You aren't a cold-blooded actor, Maya! You're good, you're human, and that makes you readable!" Alessandro’s voice broke, a raw flash of emotion bleeding through his icy facade. "Vincenzo has eyes in every room of that mansion. The only way to save your life was to make him believe I had stripped you of all value and thrown you away! I had to make him hate me and ignore you!"
"Well, it failed!" I hissed, stepping right up to him, until the front of his expensive coat touched my hand. "Because your father knew. He knew about the ring, Alessandro. He knew what you hid inside the diamond!"
Alessandro’s eyes widened slightly—a rare slip in his legendary composure. He looked down at my hand as I pulled the ring out and held it between us.
"He tried to kill Mia for this," I continued, tears of rage burning my eyes. "He tried to frame me for her murder. Your brilliant, ruthless plan almost got three innocent people butchered while you were playing chess with mob bosses!"
Alessandro looked at the blood-stained ring, then brought his gaze back to mine. To my shock, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen in four years of marriage.
Desperation.
"I didn't know Vincenzo knew about the micro-etching," Alessandro murmured, his hands twitching at his sides as if he desperately wanted to touch me, to hold me, but knew he no longer had the right. "Maya... I built this trap to kill my father's loyalists and free us. All of this... the money, the empire... I was liquidating it into that diamond key so we could disappear. I was going to burn the Romano name to the ground."
"You expect me to believe that?" I laughed bitterly. "You expect me to believe you did all this for us?"
Before Alessandro could answer, the warehouse lights flickered violently and died, plunging us into pitch darkness.
From the high metal rafters above, a amplified, raspy laugh echoed through the hollow space.
May you like
"How touching," the voice of Don Vincenzo Romano boomed through the speakers. "The traitorous son and his little artist wife, having a heart-to-heart over my stolen fortune."
Red laser sights instantly illuminated the dark warehouse, crisscrossing through the fog like a web of deadly blood.
