Chapter 3 - THE RAT IN THE ROYAL FAMILYThey thought I was just a pawn in their war of kings. They forgot that on a chessboard, the queen is the most dangerous piece on the board.

"Get down!" Alessandro roared, throwing his body over mine just as a hail of automatic gunfire shattered the glass walls of the dock office.

Sparks flew everywhere as bullets chewed through the aluminum frame and wooden furniture. Alessandro pulled a heavy matte-black pistol from his coat, firing three rapid shots blind into the darkness overhead. A scream followed by a loud, wet thud signaled a sniper falling from the high rafters to the concrete floor below.

"Leah! Get Mia into the sub-floor drainage trench!" I yelled through the ringing noise in my ears.

Dr. Ferraro was already dragging Mia’s cot toward a rusted iron grate in the floor, designed for washing down fish. She kicked the cover open and tumbled inside, pulling Mia down with her just as another burst of fire tore through the wall where they had been standing.

Alessandro pulled me behind a thick steel pillar, his heavy body pressing against mine. The scent of his expensive cedarwood cologne mixed with gunpowder and salt air. His hand was firmly planted on the back of my neck, shielding my head from falling concrete dust.

"You're a idiot, Alessandro," I panted, staring into his dark eyes.

"I know," he gritted out, popping the empty magazine from his weapon and slapping a fresh one in with a mechanical click. "I'm a fool who thought he could control the devil."

"Vincenzo has at least twelve men out there," I said, peering around the steel beam. "They have night-vision gear and high-caliber rifles. We're trapped in an open warehouse with one exit."

"Then we make a new exit," Alessandro said coldness returning to his tone. He looked at the bloody ring still clutched tightly in my fist. "Maya, if I don't walk out of here alive tonight... the key code in that diamond isn't just a bank account. It's a self-destruct trigger for the Romano shipping network. If you input those numbers into the main terminal at the harbor authority, it releases thirty years of smuggling manifests to the Federal Bureau."

I stared at him in disbelief. "You set up a dead man's switch?"

"I set up a cage for my father," he corrected, his voice dropping low. "I spent four years letting him think I was his dutiful prince while I quietly built the gallows to hang him with. But I needed time. I needed to keep you clean so when the house fell, you wouldn't be dragged into a federal courtroom."

"You idiot," I whispered again, but this time, the venom was gone, replaced by a sudden, terrifying realization of the weight he had been carrying alone. "You let me hate you."

"Hating me kept you distant," he said, his thumb brushing over my cheek, wiping away a streak of dirt and blood. "Hating me kept you alive."

"Well, it didn't work!" I snapped, pulling back. "Because I'm right here in the middle of your war! Now shut up and give me a gun."

Alessandro blinked, stunned for a fraction of a second, before a small, dark smile touched the corner of his lips. He reached into his ankle holster and pulled out a compact 9mm Glock, placing it in my hand. "Safety's off. Recoil is sharp."

"I know how to shoot, husband. My father wasn't just a goldsmith; he was an armorer for the old families before you were born."

Outside our cover, the gunfire suddenly stopped. Heavy footfalls echoed across the wet concrete.

"Alessandro!" Don Vincenzo’s voice called out from the darkness. The old man sounded calm, almost disappointed. "You were always my brightest child, yet so foolishly soft. You thought hiding behind a woman's virtue would protect your treason? Hand over the stone, step into the light, and I might let the girl live to sew your burial suit."

Alessandro looked at me, then down at the ring. "He doesn't know Mia is still alive," he whispered to me. "He thinks his men executed her last night."

"Then we use that," I whispered back, my brain working like a master jeweler fitting complex gears into place. "Vincenzo thinks he holds all the cards because he believes I'm useless and Mia is dead."

I took a deep breath, raised my hand, and aimed my gun at the high metal ceiling above the central fuel storage tank sitting in the corner of the warehouse.

"Maya, what are you doing?" Alessandro warned under his breath.

"Trusting my craftsmanship," I replied.

I fired three quick shots into the copper pressure valve of the main diesel heating unit hanging near the rafters.

CLANG! CLANG! SPARK!

Highly pressurized diesel fuel began atomizing into the air, creating a thick, volatile mist overhead.

"Vincenzo!" I shouted, stepping out from behind the steel pillar into the dim moonlight filtering through the broken windows.

Alessandro reached for me, but I shoved his hand away, standing tall, my silhouette framed by the salt fog.

"Ah, the precious little wife," Vincenzo chuckled from sixty feet away, surrounded by four armored mercenaries. "Brave, but utterly ignorant."

"I may be ignorant about your mob wars, Don Vincenzo," I said, holding the blood-stained diamond ring high above my head, catching the moonlight. "But I am an expert on metallurgy and pressurized gases. And right now, this entire room is filled with diesel vapor."

Vincenzo’s smile faltered. His eyes flicked upward toward the hiss of the leaking valve.

"If anyone fires a weapon," I said, my voice cutting through the dark like glass, "the muzzle flash will ignite this entire floor. We will all burn together in five seconds. Is your empire worth being cooked alive, Old Man?"

Silence fell over the warehouse, absolute and terrifying. The mercenaries hesitated, their fingers wavering on their triggers as they realized the air smelled heavily of fuel.

Vincenzo’s face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. "You bluffer..."

"Try me," I whispered. I raised my pistol, pointing it directly at the concrete floor beneath my feet, where an iron spark would ignite the entire atmosphere.

For the first time in his life, Don Vincenzo Romano stepped backward.
