Chapter 5 - Descent into the VaultsThe entrance to the abandoned subterranean vaults beneath the 4th Street jewelry exchange was hidden behind a rusted service elevator shaft in a decaying alleyway downtown. The air down here smelled of damp concrete, ancient copper, and centuries of accumulated coal dust.

Our footsteps echoed sharply against the arched brick ceilings as Leah, Maso, Alessandro, and I moved in a tight, disciplined formation through the labyrinthine tunnels. We each wore tactical headlamps that cut harsh white beams through the Stygian darkness, illuminating swirling motes of dust and glistening stalactites hanging from the vaulted roof.
"Hold up," Maso whispered, raising a gloved hand. He knelt beside a heavy steel reinforcement beam, shining his flashlight beam downward. "Fresh boot tracks. Vibram soles. Military issue. At least four men went this way less than an hour ago."
Alessandro crouched beside Maso, running a finger along the damp mud near the tracks. "Viktor’s personal detail. He knows we're coming."
"Of course he knows," I said, stepping past them to examine a massive, triple-bolted vault door ten yards ahead. The heavy steel door was covered in intricate mechanical dials and brass gears—a masterpiece of mid-century security engineering. "This is his trap. He wanted us to trace the manifests back here so he could bury all of us under downtown Chicago in one fell swoop."
Leah adjusted the straps of a heavy medical backpack she insisted on carrying. "Terrific. So how do we get in without turning this entire block into a smoking crater?"
"We don't pick the lock," I said, pulling a specialized digital diagnostic scanner from my toolkit and attaching its magnetic leads to the center gear of the vault door. "Viktor thinks he’s clever because he changed the master tumbler combination. But he doesn't know about the mechanical override my father built into every single one of these vaults—a thermal bypass activated by high-frequency vibration."
"How long will it take?" Alessandro asked, standing protectively behind me, his weapon drawn and scanning the dark tunnel behind us for any sign of an ambush.
"Three minutes," I said, my fingers flying across the digital keypad of my scanner. "Keep your eyes on the shadows."
The digital display hummed softly as the diagnostic tool began cycling through acoustic frequencies, testing the density of the internal steel pins. Behind us, the deep, hollow dripping of water echoed through the tunnels—drip, drip, drip—like a slow-motion clock counting down our remaining time.
"Adriana," Leah murmured nervously, staring down the intersecting tunnel to our left. "I'm hearing something. And it doesn't sound like dripping water."
Maso instantly pivoted, raising his assault rifle toward the side tunnel. "Movement at two o'clock. Heavy gear."
"Almost there," I muttered, gritting my teeth as the scanner beeped furiously, green light flashing across the dark steel door.
Suddenly, a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the brick wall beside us, sending a shower of sharp masonry shrapnel raining down into the corridor.
"Incoming!" Alessandro roared, shoving me flat against the concrete wall as he returned fire down the dark corridor with lethal precision.
The cramped tunnel erupted into a deafening roar of muzzle flashes, burning cordite, and shattering stone. Maso laid down a heavy suppressing fire, his weapon roaring in rhythmic bursts that illuminated the terrified faces of Leah and Camila, who had ducked behind a protruding support pillar.
"They're flanking us from the ventilation shaft above!" Maso yelled over the gunfire, a bullet grazing his shoulder and tearing his dark coat.
"The lock is bypassed!" I screamed, slamming my palm against the heavy brass release lever of the vault door.
With a deep, resonant clunk that vibrated through the soles of our boots, the massive steel tumblers slid open.
"Inside! Now!" Alessandro commanded, grabbing Leah and Camila and shoving them through the gaping doorway just as another storm of bullets ricocheted off the steel frame.
Maso and Alessandro backed through the threshold firing their last clips, and with a superhuman effort, Alessandro grabbed the heavy exterior wheel, spinning it shut and locking the hydraulic deadbolts from the inside.

A muffled series of heavy thuds echoed against the exterior of the steel door as Viktor’s men slammed their bodies against the barrier, followed by the grinding hiss of a heavy-duty cutting torch igniting outside.
Inside the vault, the beam of my headlamp cut through the darkness to reveal rows upon rows of wooden crates stacked neatly against the stone walls. Stamped across the side of each crate in bold black lettering was a single word: C4.
