Chapter 4 - The War in the HallwayA tyrant only holds power as long as the people around them remain afraid to bleed.

I opened the door, stepping out into the narrow carpeted hallway, slamming the heavy wooden door shut behind me.

Standing in the hallway was my mother, Victoria Mercer, wearing a flawless grey cashmere coat and pearl earrings. Beside her stood Noelle Stanton, her arms crossed, her eyes burning with malicious triumph. Behind them were two bulky men in dark suits—my mother’s personal security guards.

"Evan," Victoria said, her voice smooth, commanding, and utterly devoid of warmth. "Step away from that door. You are making a spectacle of yourself in a slum."

"Get out of this building, Mother," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register.

Noelle stepped forward, pointing a finger at me. "Evan, stop this madness! Your mother told me everything! That woman is a fortune hunter! She hid those kids for four years just so she could pop up right before our wedding and extort millions out of your family!"

I looked at Noelle, a cold smile touching my lips. "She didn't pop up, Noelle. I found her. And those 'kids' are my sons and my daughter."

Victoria scoffed, adjusting her leather gloves. "They are a mistake, Evan. A high-risk, low-class complication from a fling you should have forgotten years ago. Do you have any idea what this scandal will do to the Mercer-Stanton merger? The press conference is tomorrow morning!"

"There is no merger, Mother," I said, stepping closer until I stood inches from Victoria's face. "And there is no wedding."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. "You don't have a choice, Evan. You signed the corporate trust agreement last year. I control seventy percent of your shares in Mercer Holdings until you marry Noelle. If you walk away now, I will strip you of your position as CEO, freeze your personal bank accounts, and sue that woman for full custody of those children using every high-priced lawyer in the city!"

The hallway went dead silent.

Noelle smiled smugly behind my mother’s shoulder.

They thought they had me backed into a corner. They thought that by threatening my livelihood and my children, I would bow my head and march down the aisle like a obedient puppet.

They forgot one important thing.

Careful men keep records. But desperate fathers build arsenals.

"You think you control seventy percent of my shares, Victoria?" I asked quietly, dropping the formal word 'Mother' entirely.

Victoria froze slightly at my tone. "The trust documents—"

"The trust documents were contingent on the audit report from the Singapore expansion four years ago," I interrupted smoothly, pulling my phone from my pocket. "An audit that I personally oversaw. I knew three years ago that you were funneling offshore funds to pay off Noelle’s father's gambling debts in Macau."

Noelle’s face drained of color in less than two seconds. "Evan... what?!"

"I kept quiet because I thought you were protecting the family, Victoria," I said, looking down at my mother. "I let you manage my life because I thought I had nothing left to lose. But today... I found everything that actually matters."

I tapped my phone screen once, dialing a number on speakerphone.

"Evan?" the deep voice of my lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance, echoed through the speaker.

"Marcus," I said clearly. "Execute Protocol Phoenix. Release the forensic financial logs to the Securities and Exchange Commission, file for an emergency injunction against Victoria Mercer's board voting rights, and request a full restraining order against the Stanton family."

"Understood, CEO Mercer," Marcus replied. "The filing will be complete in ten minutes."

Victoria’s hand went to her throat, her pearl necklace rattling against her skin as her arrogant facade shattered into pieces. "Evan... you wouldn't... you're destroying our family name!"

"You destroyed this family four years ago, Victoria," I said, stepping back toward the apartment door. "Now, get out of my sight before I have the police arrest you for harassment."
