Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of a BetrayalWhen a powerful matriarch decides who is worthy of her legacy, truth becomes the first casualty of war.

Inside Rachel’s cramped two-bedroom apartment, the warmth of a small radiator hummed against the chilly spring air. The living room was filled with wooden toys, hand-drawn pictures taped to the walls, and three small coat racks near the door. It was simple, worn, but overflowing with love.
After tucking the triplets in for an afternoon nap, Rachel poured two mugs of chamomile tea and sat across from me at the small wooden kitchen table.
I held the warm mug, my mind still spinning from the sheer reality of holding my three children in my arms just minutes ago.
"Tell me what happened four years ago, Rachel," I said gently. "Every single detail."
Rachel took a shaky breath, staring down at her tea.
"The week after you left for the Singapore corporate expansion," Rachel began, her voice quiet, "I found out I was pregnant with triplets. It was a high-risk pregnancy. I was so excited, Evan. I went to your family’s estate to tell your mother so we could plan a surprise for when you flew back."
My jaw tightened. "And she trapped you."
"She didn't even let me past the foyer," Rachel wept softly. "She had her attorneys waiting in the study. Your mother told me that a girl from a working-class background carrying three illegitimate children would ruin the Mercer family reputation during the merger with the Stanton family."
"Noelle's family," I realized, the cold disgust settling in my stomach.
"Yes," Rachel nodded. "Your mother handed me a contract. She told me if I didn't sign a non-disclosure agreement and disappear from Philadelphia immediately, she would use her influence over the hospital board to revoke my nursing license and ensure my father’s small logistics business went bankrupt."
"She threatened your father?" I gasped.
"She destroyed him anyway, Evan," Rachel said, a bitter tear running down her cheek. "My father lost his business two months later. He passed away before the triplets were born. Your mother made sure no hospital in the state would hire me. I had to work two night-shift cleaning jobs just to afford rent and pay off the children's medical bills."
I reached across the table, grabbing Rachel’s hands, squeezing them tightly.
"And the letter?" I asked.
"Your mother made me write a letter saying I needed space," Rachel explained. "I wrote it hoping you would read between the lines and come find me. But your mother took that letter, forged my handwriting, and replaced it with a cruel goodbye message to make sure you would hate me enough to marry Noelle Stanton."
I closed my eyes, a dark, dangerous rage igniting deep within my soul.
My mother, Victoria Mercer, had treated my life like a chess board. She had erased my true family, killed Rachel’s father through financial destruction, and forced me into an engagement with Noelle—all to secure a corporate merger.
Suddenly, loud, heavy knocks echoed against the thin wooden front door of the apartment.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Rachel Ames!" a sharp, arrogant voice boomed from the hallway outside. "Open this door immediately! We know Evan is in there!"
Rachel gasped, her eyes wide with terror as she stood up, backing away from the door. "It's... it's your mother's private security team."

I stood up slowly, setting my tea mug on the table, feeling an icy, unbreakable composure wash over me.
"Stay with the children, Rachel," I said softly, smoothing down my jacket. "It's time my mother learned that her king has moved."
