Chapter 1 - The Forged GoodbyeWhen you discover your entire life was built on a lie, a piece of paper on a wet sidewalk can shatter a four-year illusion in three seconds.

The old envelope felt heavy in my hand, its paper worn thin at the edges as if it had been folded, unfolded, and held a thousand times through sleepless nights.
On the front, my name—Evan Mercer—was written in my mother’s unmistakable, elegant, sharp calligraphy.
My heart thudded against my ribs like a sledgehammer. The afternoon crowd of Rittenhouse Square swirled past me, but the world had narrowed down to the fading figure of Rachel Ames pushing the heavy triplet stroller toward the exit of the park.
"Evan!" Noelle’s voice sliced through the air. She caught up to me, her breath quick, her manicured hand gripping my elbow with a tight, possessive force. "What is wrong with you?! You ran across the park like a crazy person! Who was that woman?"
I didn't answer her. My thumb trembled as I pulled the faded sheet of paper from the unsealed envelope.
It was the exact letter I had received four years ago—the cold, heartless goodbye that had broken my soul. The letter that claimed Rachel had aborted our baby, accepted two hundred thousand dollars from my family, and moved to Europe with a wealthy ex-boyfriend.
Except this wasn't the letter I had read four years ago.
This was the original draft. And across the top, written in my mother’s handwriting, was a cold instruction to a private investigator: “Ensure Evan receives the modified copy. If Rachel tries to contact him, block her calls and execute the non-disclosure agreement.”
My knees went weak. The air vanished from my lungs.
"Evan, talk to me!" Noelle demanded, her blue eyes narrowing as she looked at the paper in my shaking hand. Her expression shifted—just for a fraction of a second—from confusion to a flash of calculating, terrified recognition.
"You knew," I rasped, my voice sounding hollow and distant.
"What? What are you talking about?" Noelle stammered, pulling her cream coat tighter around herself. "Evan, our wedding is in four days! We have dinner with my parents at eight! Stop acting insane over a homeless-looking woman in the park!"
I turned to look at Noelle. For two years, I had believed she was my sanctuary after my world burned down. But looking at her now, seeing the subtle panic in her eyes, the illusion shattered into dust.
"Those triplets..." I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "They're mine."
"Don't be ridiculous!" Noelle hissed, grabbing my wrist with sharp nails. "You don't know that! She probably slept with half of Philadelphia after she dumped you! You're letting a ghost ruin everything we built!"
I ripped my arm out of her grip. "I am going after her."
"If you walk away from me right now, Evan," Noelle threatened, her voice dropping into a venomous, sharp whisper, "the wedding is off. My father will pull his investment firm out of Mercer Holdings by morning. You will lose everything!"
I looked at the woman I was supposed to marry in four days, then looked down at the forged letter in my hand.

"I lost everything four years ago, Noelle," I said quietly. "I'm just going to get it back."
Without another word, I turned my back on Noelle’s enraged screams and sprinted out of Rittenhouse Square, following the faint trail of a mother running to protect my children.
