Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lisbon TicketBy 2:00 AM, the storm had settled into a quiet, freezing mist over Atlanta.

Inside Priya’s guest room, the quiet was absolute. Ren was sleeping peacefully after her nursing session, her tiny cheeks rosy, her breathing soft and even.

I sat at the small wooden desk, wearing my simple robe, staring at the digital screen of my laptop.

Beside me stood Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International and my personal legal counsel, alongside Dr. Rebecca Hayes, an expert in corporate asset recovery.

Bridget opened a heavy, red-sealed leather binder, sliding high-definition digital financial ledgers and international maritime documents flat onto the table toward me.

"Lauren, my dear," Bridget spoke softly, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional fury. "The forensic audit of the Beckett Shipping Corporation is complete."

"Where did the Lisbon ticket come from, Bridget?" I asked softly, my hands clutched around a warm cup of chamomile tea.

Bridget tapped the ledgers with a pen:

THE FORESIGHT EXTORTION SCHEME: Certified banking ledgers proving that Donald Foresight—Jade Foresight’s father and a senior European logistics baron—had been funneling $85 million in stolen commercial shipping bonds out of Colton’s legal accounts over six months.

THE REPRODUCTIVE THREAT: Intercepted encrypted audio files from September proving Jade Foresight threatened to hand forged evidence of cartel activity to federal prosecutors unless Colton agreed to sign over thirty percent of his international berths.

THE ONE-WAY TICKET: The reservation from Atlanta to Lisbon was booked forty-eight hours after Ren’s birth—not as a romantic getaway, but as an extradition proxy trap set up by Jade to force Colton onto European soil where Donald Foresight’s Syndicate held legal immunity.

My breath caught in my throat. My hands began to shake. "Colton didn't buy those tickets to run away with her...?"

"No, Lauren," Bridget revealed, sliding a second set of documents across the table. "Colton bought those tickets to force Jade and her father into a single room in Lisbon. He planned to execute a complete corporate takeover of their European berths, liquidate their assets, and permanently neutralize their threat to your daughter."

Tears of hot, bitter shock burned behind my eyelids.

"Then why didn't he tell me?!" I gasped out. "Why did he let me sit in that house for six months believing he was having an affair?!"

"Because Donald Foresight had placed a mole inside Colton's personal household," Bridget explained grimly. "Colton believed that if he revealed the truth to you, your reaction would tip off the Foresight family before he could secure the international warrants. He chose to carry the weight alone... and in doing so, he destroyed your trust."

I closed my eyes, leaning my forehead against my hands.

Colton had built cribs, researched car seats, and cried when our daughter was born. He had fought dangerous men to keep us safe. But in his arrogance, he had treated his wife like a bystander in her own life, letting me endure six months of silent agony while he played hero in the shadows.

"Where is he now, Bridget?" I whispered.

"He just boarded his private jet for Lisbon," Bridget answered softly. "And he left Marcus Vance behind with fifty armed men... to protect you and Ren until he returns."
