Chapter 5 - The Surrender at Vance & AssociatesThe conference room on the tenth floor of Vance & Associates was designed to intimidate. The walls were lined with leather-bound legal precedents, the lighting was crisp and clinical, and the massive oak table commanded absolute obedience from anyone who sat across it.

At precisely 1:55 PM, the heavy double doors opened.

Ethan walked in first. He looked ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. His shoulders were slumped, his tie was slightly askew, and the arrogant, untouchable posture of a corporate titan had been completely stripped away.

Behind him walked Sarah. She had discarded her polished corporate demeanor entirely; her face was pale, her eyes bloodshot, her designer handbag clutched against her chest like a shield.

They took their seats on the opposite side of the table.

Marcus Vance and I sat directly across from them, flanked by two junior corporate associates carrying thick binders of federal injunction filings.

"Olivia," Ethan croaked, his voice cracking as he looked across the table. "Please... let's not do this in a courtroom. We can settle this privately. Thirty years... you can't throw all of that away over a mistake—"

"A mistake, Ethan?" I interrupted, my voice cutting through the heavy air of the room like a razor. "Forgetting your anniversary is a mistake. Misplacing your car keys is a mistake. Forging an absentee divorce decree behind my back while I was securing the funding that keeps your company alive is a calculated, premeditated betrayal."

Sarah flinched, leaning over to whisper fiercely into Ethan's ear, but Ethan pushed her hand away with a sudden, bitter jerk of his shoulder.

"She holds all the cards, Sarah," Ethan muttered aloud, his voice dripping with sudden, resentful defeat. "The software patents are locked. The board already voted to strip my executive authority if we don't sign by sundown. We lost."

Sarah’s eyes flashed with venom as she turned them toward me. "You think you've won, don't you? You think destroying the man who loved you makes you powerful. You're just a bitter, lonely woman clinging to a ghost—"

"Enough," Marcus Vance snapped, slamming his palm flat against the mahogany table. "One more insult directed at my client, Mrs. Brooks—or whatever legal alias you choose to use—and I will personally motion the federal judge to freeze your personal bank accounts under the co-conspirator asset forfeiture clause."

Sarah snapped her mouth shut, sinking back into her chair with a poisonous glare.

Marcus slid a thick document across the table toward Ethan. It landed with a heavy, definitive thump right in front of my ex-husband's hands.

"Read it, sign it, and initial every page," Marcus instructed coldly. "It contains the immediate CEO resignation, the transfer of executive voting shares back to the foundational trust, the buyout terms for Sarah’s capital stake, and the public declaration invalidating the fraudulent 2023 dissolution."

Ethan picked up the silver fountain pen resting beside the document. His hand shook so violently he dropped the pen twice before managing to curl his fingers around the barrel.

He looked up at me one last time, searching my eyes for a shred of mercy, a remnant of the thirty years we had spent side-by-side building an empire from the ground up.

He found nothing. Just the cold, unyielding resolve of a woman who had already buried the past.

Ethan lowered his head, pressing the pen to the paper, and signed his name away.
