Chapter 4 - The Gathering StormBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the corporate headquarters of Brooks Enterprise was no longer a symbol of polished success; it was a crime scene of financial panic.

I sat in a private corner booth of a quiet rooftop restaurant three blocks away, sipping black coffee while my lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance—no relation to my maiden name, but the fiercest litigator in the Southeast—laid out the morning’s intelligence reports across the mahogany table.
"The federal injunction was served at 7:30 AM," Marcus reported, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with a satisfied smirk. "The moment the district court judge signed off on the emergency patent freeze, automated trading algorithms flagged Brooks Enterprise as a high-risk liability. Their institutional investors are already pulling out capital."
"And Ethan?" I asked, looking out over the Nashville skyline toward the gleaming glass tower where my former life had been unceremoniously dismantled.
"He's currently locked in an emergency board meeting with his major stakeholders, trying to explain why their primary logistics software has been legally grounded," Marcus said. "Furthermore, the board is asking serious questions about why Ethan failed to disclose that the founder held personal veto power over the IP portfolio. Sarah’s father—who provided the capital for their Southeast expansion—is threatening to sue Ethan for fraudulent misrepresentation."
A cold, bitter satisfaction warmed my chest, but there was no joy in it—only the hollow, echoing grief of a thirty-year betrayal finally meeting its reckoning.
"I don't want to destroy the company, Marcus," I said quietly, stirring my coffee. "I built the supply chains that move goods across half the country. I care about the employees, the warehouse workers, the logistics coordinators who had nothing to do with Ethan's lies."
"Then what are your terms?" Marcus asked, pulling out a blank legal pad and a silver fountain pen. "Because Ethan and his legal counsel have been calling my office every ten minutes since dawn begging for a settlement negotiation."
I looked out the window, watching the morning sun catch the glass facade of the Brooks Tower.
"Tell them I will grant a temporary, thirty-day operational license for the software," I said evenly. "Under one strict condition."
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Name it."
"Ethan steps down as CEO effective immediately, forfeiting all executive shares and voting privileges," I dictated, my voice steady and unyielding. "Furthermore, the company buys out Sarah’s financial contributions at par value and removes her from any administrative role within the firm. And finally..."
I paused, remembering the woman standing in the lobby holding a stolen symbol of my life.
"...Ethan signs a public confession acknowledging that the 2023 divorce decree was filed fraudulently without my knowledge or consent, restoring my full legal standing as the primary co-founder and surviving partner."

Marcus stared at me for a moment, a slow, admiring grin spreading across his face. "That's not a settlement, Olivia. That's an unconditional surrender."
"It's justice," I replied, closing my coffee cup. "Set up the conference room at your firm for 2:00 PM. Let's see how much fight my ex-husband has left when he doesn't have my software to hide behind."
