Chapter 6 - The Fall of VaneVictor Vane’s jaw twitched violently. He reached into his leather coat, aiming a finger at Dante. "Your wife’s family still holds thirty percent of the Pier 14 distribution leases, Moretti! You can't operate this terminal without my approval!"

I stepped forward from beneath Dante's umbrella, pulling an encrypted tablet from my coat, holding it out toward Victor.
"Your brother signed those leases over to the Moretti Master Trust four weeks ago, Mr. Vane," I announced cleanly, my voice carrying smooth, clear, and authoritative over the sound of the ocean waves. "And three hours ago, the State Attorney General’s Office unsealed a thirty-count indictment against Vane Logistics for commercial tax fraud and cargo theft."
Victor’s eyes bulged out of his head in total, horror-stricken shock. "What... what did you say?!"
Leo stepped forward with four federal marshals who had been waiting inside the secondary terminal office, holding open certified federal arrest warrants.
"Victor Vane," the lead marshal announced cleanly, "you are under arrest for federal racketeering and commercial wire fraud."
Victor dropped onto his knees right there on the wet cobblestones, his armed bodyguards immediately dropping their weapons to the floorboards, raising their hands high into the air as Dante's operators surrounded them.
Victor looked up at me with weeping, bloodshot eyes. "You... you little waitress... you destroyed my entire family!"
I looked down at him calmly from beside Dante, my hazel eyes cold, clear, and utterly unbothered.
"I didn't destroy your family, Mr. Vane," I said deadpan. "Your own greed did."

The marshals dragged Victor Vane into the back of a transport sedan, driving away into the cold rain as the entire dock crew cheered for Dante and me.
Dante wrapped his broad arm securely around my waist, pulling me flush against his side, leaning down to press a deep, sweet, fierce kiss against my lips right there under the open sky.
