Chapter 2 - The Sanctum on the RidgeThe black armored Mercedes SUV glided silently through the high wrought-iron security gates of the Moretti Manor in Alpine, New Jersey, at 11:45 PM.

The estate sat perched high on a cliff overlooking the Hudson River—a sprawling, thirty-acre stone fortress surrounded by high concrete walls, infrared security cameras, and broad-shouldered men carrying suppressed automatic rifles.

Inside the leather back seat, I sat huddled under Dante’s heavy wool coat, holding a warm mug of black tea that Leo had handed me at the crash site. My physical exhaustion was total, my muscles aching from head to toe, but my heart continued to hammer a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

Dante sat beside me in the dark interior. He had unbuttoned his collar, his blood-stained shirt rolled back at the forearms, revealing thick, dark ink wrapped around his muscles—tattoos detailing the ancient history of his family's rise to power.

He looked at me quietly in the passing amber light of the driveway lanterns.

"You're quiet, Cara," Dante noted softly.

"I'm waiting to find out if I'm a guest or a prisoner, Mr. Moretti," I replied, my voice raspy from the cold air I had swallowed on the mountain.

Dante reached out, his long, broad fingers gently catching a stray lock of wet hair that had fallen across my cheek, tucking it behind my ear with an agonizing tenderness that contradicted everything I had heard about him.

"You brought me out of a burning wreck, Cara," Dante said, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding intensity. "In my world, a debt of life is absolute. You are under my protection. That means no one in this city touches a hair on your head."

The SUV stopped outside the grand mahogany front doors.

Dante stepped out first, extending his broad, calloused hand to help me down. When my feet hit the gravel, my left knee—bruised from the fall down the ravine—buckled slightly. Before I could stumble, Dante’s arm swept around my waist, lifting me effortlessly into his arms as if I weighed nothing at all.

"Mr. Moretti! I can walk!" I gasped, my face flushing hot despite the cold wind.

"Quiet," Dante rumbled smoothly, carrying me through the grand marble foyer toward the private medical wing. "Save your energy."

The interior of the mansion was a cathedral of dark mahogany, soaring archways, and crystal light. Standing in the hallway was an elegant, middle-aged woman in a white doctor's coat—Dr. Evelyn Vance, the family’s private physician.

"Dante!" Dr. Vance gasped, her eyes widening as she took in his bleeding forehead and the soaked waitress in his arms. "My God! What happened on the mountain?!"

"Julian and Vanessa," Dante replied flatly, setting me down gently onto a leather examination table. "Treat her hands first, Evelyn. Every cut. Every splinter. Use the local anesthetic."

"Dante, you're bleeding from a head wound—"

"Treat her first," Dante commanded, his baritone dropping into a register that left zero room for argument.

He turned to face me, taking my bruised right hand in his, looking deep into my eyes.

"I have a meeting in the main study, Cara," Dante murmured softly, his thumb gently stroking the skin near my wrist. "Stay with Evelyn. When I return... the people who threatened your life tonight will no longer exist."
