Chapter 2 - The Audit of the FlamesBy 2:00 AM, the Manhattan skyline was shrouded in a heavy midnight mist.

Inside the high-security executive suite on the top floor of the Blackwood Tower on Wall Street, the quiet was absolute. Outside, armored SUVs patrolled the surrounding blocks, while fifty elite Vance Security operatives guarded every entrance.

I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and dark trousers provided by Vincent's staff. My hair was dried, my hands wrapped around a warm cup of jasmine tea.

Across the broad black granite desk sat Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International, alongside two forensic accounting experts.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, staring out over the dark waters of the Hudson River, was Vincent Blackwood. He had discarded his velvet dinner jacket, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the intricate black ink covering his muscular chest and arms.

Bridget opened a heavy, red-sealed leather binder, sliding a set of yellowed, twenty-year-old high-grade bond paper documents flat onto the granite desk toward me.

"Emily, my dear," Bridget spoke softly, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional fury. "The Riverside Ice Arena fire was not an isolated incident. It was the final phase of a twenty-year corporate land grab."

I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly as I touched the paper:

THE LAND TITLE FORGERY: Certified records proving that the twenty acres under the Riverside Ice Arena belonged exclusively to my late father, David Carter, a maritime archivist who was killed in a mysterious car crash six months before the fire.

THE INSURANCE FRAUD: Financial ledgers documenting Arthur Blackwood using my father’s forged signature to secure an eighty-five-million-dollar insurance policy, which was collected forty-eight hours after the arena burned.

THE HIT ORDER: Intercepted bank transfers proving Arthur paid three hundred thousand dollars to a rogue security firm to seal the emergency exits of the arena while I was practicing inside.

Tears of hot, bitter rage burned behind my eyelids. "My father... they killed my father first, and then tried to burn me alive to stop the title from transferring to my name when I turned twenty-one!"

Vincent turned away from the glass. He walked across the room with slow, deliberate, heavy strides, stopping directly beside my chair. He didn't offer empty words; he dropped flat onto one knee flat on the rug, taking my cold hands into his broad, calloused palms.

"My father thought he was building an empire on your blood, Emily," Vincent declared softly, his slate-blue eyes burning with an absolute, apocalyptic fire. "He didn't know that the girl who survived his fire would return to burn him to the ground."

"What about Vanessa?" I asked, looking into his eyes. "She called me an imposter."

A cold sneer touched Vincent's lips. "Vanessa is the daughter of Senator Vance—the man who signed the fraudulent zoning permits for the arena site. By six o'clock this morning, Senator Vance’s accounts will be frozen, and Vanessa will be evicted from every property in this city."

Vincent reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a velvet box. Inside rested a magnificent ten-carat emerald-cut black diamond ring, surrounded by crushed white ice diamonds.

"You demanded the files as your reward, Emily," Vincent whispered, sliding the ring onto my finger, his touch sending a warm, electric current straight to my heart. "Now take the ring, take my name, and let's go execute your vengeance."
