Chapter 1 - The Shadow at Columbus CircleThe bell above the café door chimed, a sound Maya had heard a thousand times, but today it felt like a warning bell. Ever since her encounter with Lorenzo Vitale in Central Park, a heavy sense of unease had settled over her shoulders. She wiped down the laminate counter, her mind drifting back to Lorenzo’s sharp, calculating eyes.

Her quiet life as an ordinary barista felt fragile now, like thin ice over deep water. The door opened again, and this time, the air in the room seemed to shift. Two men in dark, perfectly tailored suits entered. They didn't look like regular customers; their posture was rigid, their eyes constantly scanning the exits. They didn't order coffee. "Mr. Vitale requests your presence for dinner tonight," the taller man said, his voice flat and unyielding. "A car will wait outside your apartment at seven."
Maya stared at the card. The gold lettering bore a simple, elegant crest. "I can't. I have work, I have a life—"

"It is not an invitation, Ms. Bennett," the guard replied quietly, though the threat beneath his polite tone was unmistakable. "Mr. Vitale wishes to ensure your safety. Certain people have already noticed who you helped in the park."
Panic spiked in Maya’s chest. Before she could refuse, the men turned and walked out, leaving her standing alone with a choice that would change her world forever.
