Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost DynastyBy 2:00 AM the following morning, the top-floor penthouse executive command center at The Carter Tower in downtown Chicago was operating under a total, non-negotiable lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty elite tactical operators guarded every corridor. Inside, I stood by the glass wall staring out over the black, rain-slicked waters of Lake Michigan, wearing a simple black sweater and jeans, my custom-tailored suit discarded in the trash.
Sitting around the forty-foot mahogany conference table were Marcus Vance, independent forensic auditor Bridget Colton (who had agreed to meet via secure satellite link), and two private investigators.
Bridget Colton’s crisp, razor-sharp voice echoed cleanly through the high-fidelity room speakers, sliding digital ledgers flat onto our presentation displays:
"Michael," Bridget announced flatly, her sharp blue eyes holding cold, surgical satisfaction. "The digital and financial trace on Vanessa Moretti and your legal counsel, Richard Sterling, is complete."
I leaned over the table, my hands planted flat on the polished wood, my broad frame hunched like a wounded predator. "Tell me everything."
Bridget tapped the digital files:
THE ONE-HUNDRED-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Vanessa Moretti and Richard Sterling systematically diverted $100 million from the Carter Maritime Freight Trust over fourteen months into shell accounts in Panama.
THE MORETTI POISONING PROTOCOL: Intercepted procurement logs showing Richard Sterling imported the synthetic suppressants given to Emily directly from a private pharmaceutical laboratory in Geneva.
THE CORPORATE TAKEOVER: Certified forged proxy documents that would have transferred fifty-one percent controlling equity in Carter Holdings directly to Vanessa Moretti upon Emily’s legal commitment to an institution.
A low, terrifying growl echoed from my chest. The air in the penthouse dropped to absolute zero.
Fourteen years.
Emily had stood beside me when I lived in a five-hundred-square-foot walk-up with a rusty gun beneath my mattress and five hundred dollars in my bank account. She had bandaged my bullet wounds, cooked my meals, waited through icy hospital nights, and loved me when I had nothing.
And I had traded her sacrifice for a gold-leaf penthouse, a manipulative snake, and thirty-four nights of hollow, narcissistic treason.
"Where is Vanessa tonight, Marcus?" I asked softly, my gray eyes burning with an apocalyptic, lethal clarity.
"She's at the Drake Hotel Grand Ballroom, boss," Marcus reported. "She and Richard Sterling are hosting a private celebration dinner with forty senior syndicate board members, preparing to sign the emergency proxy transfer assuming you're too distracted by Emily's disappearance to audit the books."

I straightened my spine, smoothing the front of my black sweater, my expression settling into an unshakeable, sovereign resolve.
"Order the convoy, Marcus," I commanded flatly. "It's time to end Vanessa Moretti."
