Chapter 2 - The Terror of the DonAt 6:30 PM, the heavy mahogany front doors of the River Forest mansion were thrown open with a violent, echoing crash.

Vincent Moretti stepped into the quiet foyer, his dark tailored overcoat damp from the winter snow. He carried a leather briefcase in his right hand, his handsome, severe face contorted in an expression of dark, brooding irritation.

He had spent the afternoon at the hospital with Sophia and her son, Oliver, organizing her custody paperwork. He had returned home ready to deliver another cold lecture about my "jealousy" and "childish demands."

"Claire!" Vincent called out, his deep baritone carrying a sharp edge. "I'm home. We need to talk about that ridiculous lawyer's form you left on the table."

Silence met his voice.

The mansion was completely dark save for the single lamp burning in his ground-floor study.

Vincent frowned, tossing his coat onto the foyer chair. He walked through the quiet corridors toward his study, stopping in the doorway.

The painting was swung wide open. The wall safe stood unlocked.

And resting in the center of his massive mahogany desk were the yellowed pages of my father's trust agreement, alongside my platinum wedding ring and a single sheet of paper containing my final message:

I want a divorce. Don’t try to stop me. I know the secret you’ve been hiding all these years.

Vincent’s briefcases slipped from his hand, crashing flat against the hardwood floorboards.

Every single drop of color drained from his face, turning him an ugly, paper-white shade of green. His jaw sagged open, his storm-gray eyes bulging in pure, unvarnished terror.

He didn't scream. He didn't smash the furniture.

He sank slowly into his leather chair, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't pick up the trust document.

For five years, Vincent Moretti had believed he was invincible. He had believed that money, fear, and silence could keep his quiet wife trapped in his shadow forever.

Now, sitting in the quiet room, looking at the exposed fraud, the feared Chicago Don realized that his entire empire was built on quicksand—and the quiet woman he had left to get to the ER alone was holding the trigger.
