Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of CardsBy Wednesday evening, the walls were closing in on Grant Vance from every possible direction.

Without access to his corporate accounts, his secret credit lines, or his illegally acquired real estate assets, his high-society facade evaporated like morning mist. According to Marcus’s intelligence briefings, Tiffany—the twenty-four-year-old Instagram influencer—had abruptly blocked Grant’s number the moment she realized his credit cards were permanently dead and he couldn't pay for her weekend apartment rent in River North.

I stood by the window of Chloe’s private hospital suite, watching the distant headlights of Chicago traffic streak across the expressway below. Chloe was asleep, finally resting comfortably without machines, her color returning to normal.

Rosa was quietly organizing some clothes in the closet when a soft knock sounded at the door.

I turned around.

Standing in the doorway was Grant.

He looked like a man who had aged ten years in four days. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his tie was missing, and the arrogant, polished glow that had always defined his presence was completely gone. He looked exhausted, desperate, and hollow.

“Evelyn,” he choked out, taking a tentative step into the room.

I didn’t move from the window. My voice was as cold as winter frost. “You have five seconds to turn around and walk out of this hospital before I have hospital security physically throw you into the street. And this time, nobody will be there to pick you up.”

Grant flinched, stopping dead in his tracks. He raised his hands defensively, his voice trembling.

“Please… Evelyn, just talk to me. Just five minutes,” he begged, his eyes welling up with pathetic, forced tears. “I know I messed up. I know I was an idiot. Tiffany meant nothing to me—she was just a distraction, a stupid mistake! But destroying my business? Taking my home? Leaving me with nothing?”

“Nothing?” I repeated, turning to face him fully, my eyes blazing with restrained fury. “You call losing your illegally obtained assets ‘nothing’? What about Chloe, Grant? When you left her alone on the kitchen floor fighting for her last breath while you were popping champagne on my yacht—did you think about how close she came to having nothing?”

Grant swallowed hard, panic flickering across his face. “I didn't know she was going to have an allergic reaction! It wasn't my fault!”

“It was entirely your fault,” I hissed, stepping toward him. “You brought the allergen into the house, you ignored your daughter, you neglected your responsibilities, and you spent every waking second proving that you only cared about yourself and your social standing.”

He looked around the room, realizing there was no sympathy to be found here. Rosa glared at him from across the suite with undisguised contempt.

“We’re getting a divorce, Grant,” I said, delivering the final sentence with absolute finality. “My uncle has already filed the paperwork. You will receive a standard settlement dictated by the prenuptial agreement you signed twelve years ago—which grants you precisely zero dollars of my family’s estate and zero shares of my companies.”

Grant’s face twisted in horror. “You can’t do that! We’ve been married for twelve years! I’m entitled to equitable distribution!”

“Equitable distribution applies when both parties act in good faith,” a deep, calm voice interrupted from the doorway.

We both turned. Uncle Victor stood in the entrance, flanked by two towering corporate security guards in black suits. Victor stepped into the room, looking at Grant the way a scientist might look at a particularly repulsive insect.

“Furthermore, Grant,” Victor continued smoothly, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket and tossing it onto the hospital tray table. “That is a criminal summons for corporate forgery and fraudulent asset transfer. The district attorney’s office accepted our filing thirty minutes ago. You have forty-eight hours to surrender your passport before federal marshals come looking for you.”

Grant stared at the paper on the table as if it were a venomous snake. The last remaining color drained from his skin, leaving him a ghastly, ashen gray.

“You… you’re ruining me,” Grant whispered, looking at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“No, Grant,” I said quietly, walking back to stand beside Chloe’s bed and gently stroking her hair. “You ruined yourself. I just stopped protecting you from the consequences.”

Victor nodded to the security guards. “Escort Mr. Vance out of the building. Permanently.”

Without another word, the two guards grabbed Grant by his elbows and hauled him out of the suite, his boots scraping weakly against the floor as he muttered incoherent threats that died in the hallway.

The heavy door clicked shut behind them.

The room fell silent once more—not the suffocating silence of an ICU, but the quiet, profound peace of a storm that had finally cleared.
