Chapter 4 - The Voice in the DarkTen minutes later, the heavy iron hatch beneath the wine cellar opened with a metallic creak.

Elena stepped out, holding the four boys tightly behind her, her eyes scanning the dim room until they landed on me.
I had stripped off my blood-stained jacket, washed my hands, and stood waiting near the wooden wine racks wearing a clean white shirt.
The smallest boy—the one who held Sofia's photograph—looked up at me, took three tentative steps forward, and stopped two feet away. His little brown eyes searched my face with a quiet, heartbreaking curiosity.
"Are you our daddy?" he whispered softly, his voice trembling slightly.
I dropped onto my knees flat on the dusty concrete floor, bringing my height down level with his. I reached out my broad, calloused hand, my long fingers gently, reverently touching his soft cheek.
"Yes, my son," I rasped, tears finally burning behind my eyes. "I am your daddy."
The other three boys ran forward, throwing their small arms around my neck and shoulders. I pulled all four of my sons into my broad chest, holding them tight against my beating heart, smelling the sweet scent of soap and rain in their hair.
For five years, I had lived in a cold, empty palace, believing my family had been erased from the earth. Holding my four boys against my chest, I felt a deep, weightless warmth fill every corner of my soul.
Elena walked over, setting a small, worn leather journal into my lap.
"This was Sofia's diary, Alejandro," Elena whispered softly. "She wrote in it every single day while she was in Maine. She wanted you to have it."
I opened the yellowed pages. Written in my wife's fluid, familiar handwriting were hundreds of entries, but the final entry on the last page was dated four months ago—written three hours before her heart failed:
"My dearest Alejandro,
If you are reading this, Elena has brought our boys home to you. Do not spend your life weeping for the years we lost. I hid our sons because I loved them, and I knew you would tear the world apart to keep them safe once you knew.
Rule your empire, my king. Teach our boys to be strong, honorable, and fair. And remember that wherever you go, my love remains wrapped around you and our sons forever.
— Sofia"
I closed the journal, placing it carefully inside my inner pocket beside my heart.
May you like
I stood up, holding two of my boys in my arms while the other two held my hands, and looked at Elena.
"You're coming with us, Elena," I promised. "You protected my blood for five years. You are family now."
