Chapter 5 - The ArraignmentThe federal courtroom in lower Manhattan was dim, cold, and smelled faintly of floor wax and old paper.

At the defense table, Eleanor Moretti sat with her back rigidly straight, her designer jacket wrinkled from the transport flight, her face a mask of bitter fury. Beside her, Chloe was dabbing at her eyes with a crumpled tissue, while Mark stared blankly at the polished mahogany table, realizing the full extent of the legal trap they had walked into.

In the gallery sat David, observing the proceedings with a cold, detached indifference. He didn't feel anger anymore. He felt only the profound, cleansing clarity of a man who had finally cut out a cancer that had poisoned his life for decades.

“Case number 2026-CR-4412,” the federal magistrate announced, adjusting his spectacles as he reviewed the case file. “United States versus Eleanor Moretti, Chloe Davis, and Mark Davis. The charges include wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen funds, and criminal endangerment resulting in severe medical neglect.”

The court-appointed defense attorney stood up immediately, clearing his throat. “Your Honor, my clients plead not guilty to all charges. These matters stem from a domestic family dispute that has been wildly exaggerated by the plaintiff—'”

“Mr. Henderson,” the judge interrupted, his voice cutting through the courtroom like a razor. “I have reviewed the corporate bank ledgers, the wire transfer histories, the security camera footage from the defendants' residence, and the medical records from Mount Sinai Hospital regarding Mrs. Maya Moretti.”

The judge looked up from his papers, his eyes fixing sternly on Eleanor.

“This is not a domestic dispute,” the judge continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “This is a calculated, systematic financial exploitation of corporate assets combined with the callous, intentional endangerment of a recovering postpartum mother and an infant. The prosecution’s evidence of flight and asset concealment is overwhelming.”

Eleanor’s head snapped up, her lips parting in outrage. She half-rose from her chair, ignoring her attorney’s frantic whispers to sit down.

“Your Honor, my son has been brainwashed!” Eleanor called out, her voice echoing sharply in the courtroom. “I raised that ungrateful boy! I gave up my life for him! That woman stole him from our family—!”

“Mrs. Moretti, sit down or you will be held in contempt of court,” the bailiff barked, stepping closer.

The judge banged his gavel once, the sharp crack silencing the room instantly.

“Bail is denied,” the judge ruled coldly. “Given the defendants' access to offshore accounts funded by the illicit wire transfers, they will be remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections pending trial. Court is adjourned.”

As the bailiff stepped behind Eleanor to place her back in handcuffs, she turned her head, fixing David with a look of pure, venomous hatred across the courtroom.

David didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He simply met her gaze with absolute, unyielding calm, then slowly turned his head away, dismissing her entirely from his existence.

It was the final, definitive goodbye.
