Chapter 4 - The Hospital SanctuaryBack in Manhattan, the sun was casting a warm, golden glow across the private recovery room at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Maya sat propped up against a stack of pillows, holding little Liam against her chest. The baby was nursing quietly, his tiny fingers curled into the fabric of her hospital gown. The color had fully returned to Maya’s cheeks, and the tension that had permanently furrowed her brow over the past six years seemed to have finally melted away.
The door clicked open, and David walked in carrying a tray of fresh breakfast from the hospital cafeteria, along with a warm cup of herbal tea for Maya.
“How are my two favorite people?” David asked softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to Maya’s temple before brushing his knuckles gently against Liam’s cheek.
Maya smiled, looking up at him with eyes full of a quiet, profound gratitude. “We’re wonderful. The pediatrician says Liam gained two ounces overnight. And my incision feels much better since the antibiotics kicked in.”
David pulled a chair close to the bed, sitting down and taking her free hand in his.
“Good,” David said softly. “Because you’re never going back to that apartment alone. In fact, we’re not going back to Park Slope at all.”
Maya blinked in surprise. “What do you mean?”
“I spoke with our real estate agent this morning,” David explained calmly. “The brownstone is listed for sale as of an hour ago. We’re moving to a townhouse in Greenwich, Connecticut. Closer to my new regional office, surrounded by parks, and completely out of reach of anyone who thinks they have a claim on our lives.”
Maya’s breath caught. She squeezed his hand tightly. “David... are you sure? Your family—your mother—won't they try to—?”
“My mother, Chloe, and Mark were arrested three hours ago in Miami,” David interrupted gently.
Maya stared at him, her mouth slightly open. “Arrested?”
“Grand larceny, wire fraud, embezzlement, and criminal endangerment,” David listed matter-of-factly. “James Miller handled the coordination with the Florida authorities. They’re currently on a transport flight back to New York, and they’ll be spending the next few weeks answering to a federal magistrate before a criminal court judge.”
For a long moment, Maya couldn't speak. A heavy, invisible weight that she had carried since the day she married into the Moretti family seemed to lift from her shoulders, dissolving into nothingness. She had spent years trying to appease Eleanor, biting her tongue against cruel remarks, enduring slights and cold treatment because she believed it was the price of being David’s wife.
And now, the illusion of family loyalty had shattered, replaced by the fierce, unyielding protection of the man she loved.
A single tear spilled over Maya’s lashes and tracked down her cheek, but she was smiling.
May you like
“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Not just for stopping them... but for seeing me. For believing me.”
“I should have seen it sooner,” David murmured, leaning forward to rest his forehead against hers. “I let tradition blind me to who they really were. But that ends today. From now on, it’s just us. You, me, and Liam.”
