Chapter 5 - The Raid on Vance BioresearchAt 6:30 a.m., the rain over Fort Worth had cleared into a cold, gray dawn.

The private industrial campus of Vance Bioresearch Operations sat hidden behind an eight-foot chain-link fence on the outskirts of the city, disguised as an offshore medical logistics warehouse.

Four black armored vans from the Texas Department of Public Safety, flanked by six federal law enforcement vehicles, pulled up to the main gate without sirens.

I sat in the front passenger seat of Elena’s tactical SUV, wearing a heavy dark jacket over my clothes, holding a warm cup of coffee that my shaking hands could barely keep still.

Beside me, Elena Vance—a sharp, thirty-eight-year-old woman with Julian’s hazel eyes but none of his sociopathic charm—checked the seals on a federal search warrant signed thirty minutes ago by a U.S. Magistrate Judge.

"The digital audit files you pulled from Julian's server were gold, Sofia," Elena said softly, looking over at me with quiet, fierce respect. "The offshore wire transfers match three active federal warrants out of Switzerland for illegal human pharmaceutical testing."

"They were going to commit me," I whispered, looking out at the cold concrete building.

"They're going to federal prison," Elena corrected cleanly.

She tapped her tactical radio. "Units, move in."

BOOM!

The hydraulic ram on the lead armored van smashed the chain-link gates off their hinges, tearing through the perimeter as thirty federal agents and state troopers flooded onto the property.

Inside the building’s central laboratory wing, Dr. Vanessa Reed was standing near a stainless-steel counter, frantically packing hard drives and encrypted server drives into a heavy duffel bag.

Beside her, Julian stood in a rumpled suit, shouting into his phone while Marcus held a bloody towel against his cheek.

"The wire won't clear until eight!" Julian screamed into the phone. "I don't care about the local accounts! Transfer the Singapore funds now—"

CRACK!

The reinforced glass doors of the laboratory shattered inward as tactical officers flooded the room, their high-intensity weapons pointing red laser sights across Julian, Marcus, and Vanessa.

"FEDERAL MARSHALS! DON'T MOVE!"

Vanessa shrieked, dropping her duffel bag as two agents forced her hands behind her back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Julian backed away against the stainless-steel examination table—the very table where I had been held unconscious for four months—his face turning the color of chalk as he saw Elena step through the shattered doorway.

And walking right behind Elena, her posture fluid, standing tall on her own two feet, was me.

Julian’s jaw worked silently. His bloodshot eyes locked onto my face, his arrogant, manipulative composure completely dissolving into pure, unadulterated horror.

"Sofia...?" Julian choked out, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch. "Sofia... sweetheart, please... listen to me! Vanessa forced me into this! She had debts on the firm! I was trying to protect you—"

I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

I walked straight up to him, stopping three feet away, looking at the man I had spent three years loving, seeing nothing left except a pathetic coward standing in the light.

"I kept the recorder on, Julian," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and cold as winter ice. "Every word you said to Marcus last night is already on the federal evidence portal."

Julian stumbled back against the table, his knees giving out as two federal marshals grabbed his arms, driving him down onto the floor, clicking steel cuffs around his wrists.
