Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Gambit

When Vivian and Dominic stepped back through the glass doors into the grand ballroom, the atmosphere shifted instantly. The murmurs and whispers died down into a reverent, terrified hush. Hundreds of pairs of eyes—wealthy socialites, influential politicians, and corporate titans—turned toward them.

The media cameras, which had been recording Ryan’s dramatic arrest, immediately pivoted toward Vivian. Flashes blinded the room, but she didn't flinch. She walked beside Dominic Bell with the unyielding, devastating grace of royalty reclaiming a stolen throne.

The hotel’s general manager, a trembling man in a tailored tuxedo, hurried over, bowing slightly as he approached Dominic and Vivian.

"Mr. Bell... Ms. Carter," the manager stammered, wringing his hands. "We... we are so deeply sorry for the disturbance caused by Mr. Bennett. The hotel board is at your immediate disposal. Please, let us know how we can rectify—"

"There is no need for apologies, Director," Vivian interrupted, her voice clear, calm, and carrying an absolute authority that made the manager look up in sheer astonishment. "The disturbance has been removed. But there is the small matter of the evening's remaining agenda."

"Of... of course, Ms. Carter. What would you like us to do?"

"Announce the restructuring of the charity gala's endowment," Vivian instructed smoothly. "Effective immediately, the entirety of the evening's proceeds—alongside a matching ten-million-dollar grant from Bell-Carter Global—will be redirected into the pediatric cancer research fund, bypassing all municipal intermediaries. Furthermore, the hotel’s primary event space is no longer under contract with the Bennett campaign. It is now designated as the permanent Chicago headquarters of the Carter Foundation."

The manager swallowed hard, staring at her as if he were seeing a ghost. The quiet, submissive woman who had spent months organizing hotel logistics behind the scenes was gone. In her place stood a formidable corporate leader who commanded rooms with a single sentence.

"Right away, Ms. Carter! I'll make the announcement immediately!" the manager scrambled off toward the stage.

Across the room, Madison stood near a marble pillar, looking utterly desolate. Her makeup was streaked with tears, her designer gown rumpled, and every single person she had spent the evening networking with was actively avoiding eye contact with her. She was a pariah—abandoned by Ryan, despised by society, and completely exposed.

Vivian glanced at her sister for a brief moment, feeling neither pity nor malice. Just a profound, liberating indifference.

Dominic watched Vivian closely, a quiet warmth in his dark eyes. "Your grandfather would have been profoundly proud of you tonight, Vivian."

"He would have told me I wasted three years on a fool," Vivian replied softly, a faint, melancholic smile touching her lips.

"Perhaps," Dominic agreed gently. "But wisdom isn't given, Vivian. It is forged in the fire. And the fire has only just begun."

The manager tapped the microphone on the central stage, feedback whistling softly through the speakers before he cleared his throat and made Vivian’s announcements official. Across the room, high-society elites who had ignored Vivian hours ago now began scrambling for position, desperate to catch her eye, to offer congratulations, to secure an introduction.

Vivian ignored them all. She turned to Dominic, her mind racing with the next phase of the war. "Julian Sterling isn't going to sit quietly while we dismantle his puppet. He’s going to retaliate."

"Let him try," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a chillingly calm register. "For ten years, Julian has operated in the shadows of Chicago real estate. Tomorrow morning, we drag him out into the sunlight."
