Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

As security guards swarmed Ryan and pinned him to the floor, the heavy oak doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung open. A squad of federal law enforcement officers, led by a senior investigator from the Department of Financial Crimes, marched into the room with unyielding purpose.

Vivian watched the spectacle unfold with a chilling sense of detachment. The man she had loved—or thought she loved—for three years was currently being handcuffed on the floor of a ballroom she had decorated with her own hands, surrounded by the very people he had tried to manipulate.

Dominic gently placed a hand on Vivian’s shoulder, guiding her away from the commotion toward a private VIP balcony overlooking the city skyline.

"You didn't just happen to be standing by the service hallway tonight, did you, Dominic?" Vivian asked quietly, her eyes reflecting the glittering lights of Chicago below them. She turned to face him, the adrenaline finally beginning to fade, leaving a profound, aching curiosity in its wake. "You knew what Ryan was doing all along."

Dominic walked over to the glass railing, resting his hands on the polished stone. "I knew what he was attempting to do from day one, Vivian. But catching a rat requires letting him eat enough cheese to expose the entire underground network. Your grandfather knew that. That’s why, before he passed away, he left specific instructions in his will regarding the protection of the Carter estate—and protection for you."

Vivian’s breath caught in her throat. "My grandfather? But he died five years ago... long before I even met Ryan."

"Your grandfather was a brilliant man, Vivian," Dominic said softly, turning to look down at her with eyes full of ancient warmth. "He anticipated that someone would eventually try to exploit your kindness, your loyalty, and your dedication to the family foundation. He asked me—as his oldest friend and business partner—to watch over you. I watched you pour your heart into building Ryan’s career, hoping against hope that he actually deserved you. But some men are built of hollow glass. They only know how to shatter."

Vivian looked down at the documents still clutched in her hand. The pain of the betrayal was still raw, burning beneath her skin like acid, but alongside it was a fierce, liberating spark of empowerment. She wasn't the victim here. She was the rightful heir to a legacy that had just reclaimed its throne.

"What happens now?" Vivian asked steadily.

"Now," Dominic replied, a confident smile touching his lips, "we dismantle the entire corporate structure Ryan built on your family's name. And tomorrow morning, you step into the executive suite of Bell-Carter Global as its primary managing director."

Before Vivian could process the magnitude of that statement, the glass doors behind them slid open. A sleek, silver-haired corporate lawyer stepped out, holding a secure tablet.

"Mr. Bell. Ms. Carter," the lawyer nodded respectfully. "The federal warrants have been executed. All personal and corporate assets belonging to Ryan Bennett have been seized and transferred into a temporary holding trust under Ms. Carter's exclusive control. Furthermore... we found something unexpected during the raid on his downtown office."

Dominic frowned slightly. "What kind of unexpected?"

The lawyer handed the tablet to Vivian. "It’s a series of encrypted communication logs between Ryan Bennett and an unknown third party—someone outside of Chicago. Someone who was actively funding his campaign behind the scenes, using him as a puppet to acquire key real estate parcels across the North Side."

Vivian stared at the screen, her blood running cold. The name on the encrypted sender profile wasn't a corporate entity. It was a familiar name from her family's past—a name she thought had vanished forever.
