Chapter 2 - The Second EnvelopeThe whispers among the four hundred high-society guests began like a low rustle of dry leaves before swelling into a thunderous storm.

"Quadruplets?!" an elderly senator in the second row gasped. "Evelyn carried quadruplets in secret while they paid her off?!"
"Look at those boys," a prominent Manhattan socialite whispered loudly behind her pearl fan. "They have the exact Whitmore face. But look at Vanessa... why is she looking at the guards?"
Arthur Whitmore ignored the crowd completely. He stepped up beside Julian, snatching the four DNA reports from his son's hands. He scanned the official seals, the Geneva lab credentials, and the matching genetic markers.
"Four..." Arthur breathed, a strange, overwhelming look of sheer, possessive greed lighting up his aging features. "Four legitimate Whitmore children... two boys..."
He looked up at me, adjusting his silk tie, attempting to smooth his expression into the domineering, corporate posture he had used two years ago.
"Evelyn," Arthur spoke, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a low, transactional tone. "This changes everything. You should have told us immediately. Twelve million was the price for an empty marriage, but four Whitmore heirs... name your price. We will adjust the trust distribution today. We will set up a private estate for you in Newport."
I let out a soft, cool laugh that made Arthur freeze mid-sentence.
"You still think everything in this world has a price tag, Arthur," I said, my hazel eyes holding his with absolute disdain. "I didn't come here to sell you my children. I don't need your money. My grandmother’s European trust matured six months ago, and my art restoration firm in Zurich is fully funded."
Julian looked at me as if he were seeing me for the first time in his life. The quiet, gentle girl who used to wear simple cotton dresses and wait up for him until midnight was gone. Standing before him was a sovereign woman in a custom ivory pantsuit, unbothered, radiant, and fiercely whole.
"Then why are you here, Evelyn?" Julian choked out, his voice thick with a sudden, overwhelming regret. "Why come to my wedding?"
"Because you built your entire dynasty on a foundation of betrayal," I answered flatly.
I reached into my white leather handbag, pulling out a second, smaller document bound by a red legal wax seal.
I didn't hand it to Julian. I laid it flat on the altar's marble reading stand right beside Vanessa's dropped orchid bouquet.
"Before I left America two years ago," I announced, every word carrying cleanly across the silent courtyard, "I noticed something interesting in the Whitmore Group's secondary medical insurance logs. Vanessa wasn't visiting the Whitmore private clinic in Manhattan during the month she claimed she conceived her triplets."

Vanessa let out a choked, horrific gasp, taking two fast steps backward, her high heels catching in the lace hem of her gown.
"She was visiting a private fertility and donor clinic in upstate New York," I continued, looking directly at Arthur and Julian. "Registered under her maiden name, funded by an offshore account owned by her former fiancé, Marcus Sterling."
