Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary in the HillsSix months after the night at the hospital, a warm, clear spring sun painted the sweeping oceanfront grounds of the Vance Estate in Gold Coast, Long Island, in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and deep sapphire.

The dark, predatory shadow of Arthur Sterling, his sons, and six years of hidden trauma was permanently, historically erased from our lives.

The sprawling fifty-acre estate was decorated with blooming white orchids, yellow sunflowers, and sunlit tables for the official launch of the foundation and our firm's annual rededication.

Over three hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, Prosecutor Rachel Vance, Marco, and close friends gathered around white-linen tables set up along the stone patio, enjoying fine food and live acoustic music.

Clara Vance stood near the marble balustrade wearing a breathtaking floor-length ivory silk gown that celebrated every line of her recovered, radiant figure. Her dark chestnut hair fell in glossy waves over her shoulders, her hazel eyes shining with absolute, unshakeable victory, inner peace, and sovereign grace.

Down on her left hand rested a magnificent, flawless fifteen-carat emerald-cut diamond ring—a symbol of my eternal, unbroken devotion—alongside a gold signet ring matching my own.

I walked out onto the terrace wearing an immaculate black tuxedo, holding two glasses of sunlit cider, stepping up beside Clara near the balustrade.

I wrapped my broad, warm arm around her waist, pulling her back flush against my solid frame, leaning down to press a sweet, lingering kiss against her temple.

"What are you thinking about, my queen?" I whispered softly into her ear.

Clara looked out over the vast, sparkling blue waters of Long Island Sound stretching before us into the unbroken horizon, leaning her head comfortably back against my broad chest.

"I was thinking about six words sent on a phone outside an ICU," Clara answered softly, a radiant, beautiful smile lighting up her face. "And how the quiet man I married turned out to be my absolute protector."

I offered a soft, breathtaking smile—a look of pure, eternal love that lit up my severe features.

"You are my heart, Clara," I promised, my deep voice thick with emotion, leaning down to press my lips against hers in a deep, unhurried, and passionate kiss. "And I will spend the rest of my life protecting yours."
