Chapter 6: The Courtroom Judgment and the Final Reckoning

The Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance—no relation to the hospital physician, but a magistrate renowned across the state for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence—presided over the proceedings with cold, unyielding authority. The trial itself was remarkably brief, lasting less than three hours. Marcus’s lead prosecutor didn't even need to call witnesses; he simply played Nora’s unedited, crystal-clear security recording of the kitchen assault on the courtroom’s massive overhead screens. The horrifying audio of Victor striking me with the wooden cane, Helena cheering him on, and Raul laughing mockingly echoed off the marble walls, causing several jurors to cover their mouths in shock and disgust. Victor stared blindly at the defense table, unable to look me in the eye as the devastating evidence washed over the room.

When the jury returned after a mere twenty minutes of deliberation, the verdict was unanimous across all counts: guilty of aggravated felony domestic assault, intentional endangerment of an unborn child, conspiracy, and coercion. Judge Vance didn't mince words when delivering the sentence. "Mr. Victor Davis, your actions exhibited a depraved indifference to human life, cowardice of the highest order, and a cruel abuse of domestic authority," the judge declared, her gavel coming down with a sharp, echoing crack. "I sentence you to twenty-five years in a maximum-security state penitentiary with no possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. Furthermore, protective orders are granted permanently shielding Elena Sterling and her child from you and your family for the rest of your natural lives." As the bailiffs grabbed Victor by the shoulders to drag him away toward the holding cells, he let out a pathetic, muffled sob, casting one desperate, pleading glance in my direction. I didn't flinch. I didn't blink. I simply looked right through him as if he were nothing more than transparent air.
