Chapter 7 - Sunrise Over Blackwood LakeThe autumn air over Blackwood Lake was crisp, fragrant with the scent of pine needles and woodsmoke. The trees along the shoreline had burst into brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold, reflecting brilliantly across the mirror-like surface of the water.

Nora stood on the expansive front porch of her father’s stone house, holding a steaming mug of spiced cider in both hands. She wore a comfortable cream-colored fisherman’s sweater and soft denim jeans, her long brown hair blowing gently in the morning breeze.

From the lawn below came the sound of joyful laughter.

Sophie, now seven years old and brimming with vibrant, untamed energy, was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the dew-kissed grass, her bright red scarf trailing behind her like a banner of pure freedom.

Colonel Arthur Ellis stepped out onto the porch, carrying a pair of heavy wooden oars over his shoulder. He stopped beside his daughter, looking out across the sparkling lake where a small wooden fishing boat bobbed gently against the private dock.

“The weather’s holding up,” Arthur said, a rare, warm smile softening the rugged lines of his face. “Perfect morning for a boat ride, if you and Sophie are up for it.”

Nora turned her head, looking up at her father with profound gratitude and unconditional love. “I think we’d love that, Dad.”

She looked back down at the lawn, watching her daughter scoop up the tumbling puppy into her arms and spin around in a joyful circle under the golden morning sun.

The nightmare of Christmas Eve felt like a lifetime ago—a distant, frozen storm that had finally cleared away. Looking out at the endless blue sky and the golden light dancing across the water, Nora took a deep, steady breath of the crisp air.

She didn't need to look back anymore. For the first time in her life, the future was entirely hers to write.
