Chapter 5 - The Colonel’s TermsInside the warm, secure confines of Arthur Ellis’s stone house by Blackwood Lake, the smell of fresh cinnamon rolls and brewed coffee filled the air. Sophie sat at the wooden kitchen table, completely wrapped in a oversized flannel shirt, happily coloring pictures with a box of brand-new crayons her grandfather had bought from the village store.

Nora sat across from her, holding a mug of tea. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by a quiet, resolute strength she hadn't felt in years. The bruises on her wrist were fading under a soothing ointment Arthur had applied earlier that morning.
The heavy oak front door opened, and Arthur stepped inside, shaking the light snow off his broad shoulders. He hung his heavy wool coat on the brass peg by the door and walked into the kitchen, his expression calm and composed.
“Well,” Arthur said, pouring himself a cup of coffee. “The mansion has been successfully reclaimed. The forfeiture clauses have been officially executed, and the corporate board has voted unanimously to restructure Hale Enterprises under direct Ellis management.”
Nora looked up from her tea. “And Evan?”
“Evan is currently sitting in a holding cell at the county detention center, awaiting arraignment on multiple felony counts ranging from financial forgery to domestic abuse,” Arthur said smoothly, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite his daughter. “His defense attorneys tried to file for immediate bail, but federal prosecutors presented the complete forensic audit of the embezzled trust funds within minutes. Bail was denied without a hearing.”
Sophie looked up from her coloring book, her big eyes wide. “Is the bad man gone, Mommy?”
Nora smiled gently, reaching across the table to stroke her daughter’s soft hair. “Yes, sweetheart. He’s gone, and we are never going back to that house.”
Arthur leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. He slid a single, clean document across the wood toward Nora.
She picked it up. At the top, bold letters read: Petition for Full Custody, Name Restoration, and Dissolution of Marriage.
“Your old life was built on sand, Nora,” Arthur said softly, his voice carrying the deep, unwavering warmth of a father who would move mountains to protect his family. “You walked away with nothing this morning because Evan thought he owned you. But the truth is, you never lost your strength. You just forgot where you came from.”
Nora read the document carefully. Every line was meticulously crafted to ensure absolute protection, financial independence, and permanent security for her and Sophie. There were no loopholes. There was no room for manipulation.
“What happens next, Dad?” Nora asked, looking up into his steady eyes.

“Next, you take back your maiden name,” Arthur replied with a faint, proud smile. “You take back your career in marketing—our firm has already acquired the digital agency you used to work for, and they are holding your old office suite for you whenever you are ready. And most importantly, you live your life on your own terms.”
Nora looked down at the paper, then over at Sophie, who had returned to coloring her picture with joyful concentration. The cold fear that had chained her soul for eight long years finally melted away completely.
