Chapter 6 - The Confession in the DarkThe ride back to the Moretti estate was silent, save for the hum of the tires against the wet asphalt.

When we walked into the grand foyer, the house was dark and peaceful. Mrs. Gable had already put Leo to bed hours ago, leaving only a single lamp burning on the console table.

I kicked off my high heels, letting out a long, exhausted breath, and sank into the velvet armchair near the fireplace.

Ricardo poured two glasses of scotch from the crystal decanter on the bar cart, walked over, and handed one to me before taking a seat opposite.

“You were brilliant tonight,” he said quietly, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “Calder is finished. His empire is being dismantled piece by piece as we speak. You’re completely safe now, Clara.”

I looked down at the swirling amber liquid in my glass. A strange, hollow ache settled into my chest.

“Safe,” I repeated softly. “Does that mean my job here is done?”

Ricardo froze. He raised his eyes, his stormy gray gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch.

“Is that what you want?” he asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, vulnerable register. “Do you want to take your money, walk out those front gates, and pretend none of this ever happened?”

I looked at him—really looked at him. Beneath the tailored suits, the ruthless reputation, and the armor of the mafia boss, I saw a man who had sacrificed his entire life to protect the people he loved. A man who had looked at me across a crowded, chaotic restaurant and recognized a kindred soul drowning in grief.

“No,” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. “I don't want to leave.”

Ricardo stood up slowly, crossed the space between our chairs, and knelt down on one knee in front of me, taking my hand in his. His fingers were warm, rough, and steady.

“When you walked across that dining room floor at Il Verano and picked up my son,” Ricardo murmured, his voice thick with emotion, “you didn't just save him, Clara. You brought a dead house back to life. I never expected to care about anyone like this again. I never expected to let someone past the gates.”

He reached up, his thumb gently brushing against my cheekbone.

“Stay with us,” he whispered. “Not as a nanny. Not as an employee. Stay as my partner. Stay as the heart of this home.”

Tears spilled over my lashes, but this time, they weren't tears of fear or sorrow.

I leaned forward, cupping his face with my hand, and pressed my lips softly against his. The kiss was deep, sure, and filled with all the unspoken promises of a future we were building together out of the ashes of our pasts.
