Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last ShedWhen the ship goes down, the rats don't just swim away—they turn on each other to survive.

Three months later.

The criminal trial of Cameron Bennett and Sophie Miller began at the New York County Supreme Court.

The courtroom was packed with reporters, medical staff, and curious onlookers. Cameron sat at the defense table next to a public defender—he could no longer afford his private defense team after liquidating his last assets to pay off his mounting debts.

Beside him sat Sophie, represented by her own court-appointed attorney.

The atmosphere in the room turned ice-cold when I entered the courtroom. I wore an exquisite charcoal-grey wool suit, my posture perfect, carrying myself with the quiet dignity of a woman who had triumphed over hell.

Sitting in the front row reserved for my family were Marcus Vance and my mother, holding three-month-old baby Leo in a soft blue blanket. Leo was thriving—a chubby, happy baby with bright, curious eyes that had never known fear.

When Cameron saw Leo, tears spilled down his sunken cheeks. He reached out a hand toward the baby, but a court officer sternly blocked his path.

"State your first witness," the judge ordered.

The prosecutor stood up. "The State calls Sophie Miller to the stand."

Cameron’s head snapped toward Sophie in absolute shock. "What?!" he muttered frantically. "Sophie, what are you doing?!"

Sophie walked up to the witness stand, taking the oath with a trembling hand. She had traded her glamour for a modest outfit, playing the role of a terrified young student manipulated by an older, powerful predator.

"Miss Miller," the prosecutor asked, "can you detail your relationship with Dr. Cameron Bennett during the night in question?"

Sophie wiped a tear from her eye, her voice wavering perfectly. "Dr. Bennett was my supervising physician. He... he pressured me into a personal relationship, promising me that if I helped him humiliate Dr. Grant, he would guarantee my surgical residency placement."

"That's a lie!" Cameron screamed, jumping out of his chair at the defense table. "She set the whole thing up! She cut her own hand and blamed Amelia! She manipulated me!"

"Order in the court!" the judge slammed his gavel hard. "Sit down, Defendant Bennett, or I will have you remanded in custody immediately!"

Sophie continued, her voice dripping with calculated remorse. "That night, Dr. Bennett explicitly told me that he wanted to 'break' Dr. Grant's pride. He turned off the epidural on purpose to punish her for being more successful than him. I was terrified of him, so I stayed quiet."

Cameron slumped back into his chair, his face buried in his hands, realizing that the very snake he had sheltered to poison me had turned its fangs directly on him.

When it was my turn to take the stand, I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I simply stated the cold, objective medical facts of what happened in that delivery room. I recounted the pain, the physical trauma, and the conscious decision Cameron made to ignore standard medical care to satisfy his own fragile ego.

"Dr. Grant," the prosecutor asked, "do you believe Defendant Bennett acted out of medical panic, or deliberate malice?"

I looked directly at Cameron. He raised his eyes, begging me silently with his gaze to spare him.

"Dr. Bennett is an experienced surgeon," I said, my voice steady and firm as diamond. "He knew precisely what turning off that epidural would do to a woman carrying a ten-pound child. He didn't panic. He chose torture."

The jury returned a verdict in less than two hours.

Sophie Miller was found guilty of medical falsification and obstruction, sentenced to two years of probation, and permanently banned from ever attending medical school or working in healthcare.

Cameron Bennett was found guilty of felony assault, medical malpractice, and reckless endangerment.

The judge sentenced him to twelve years in state prison.

As the officers handcuffed Cameron and led him away in orange jumpsuit scrubs, he turned back to look at me one last time, weeping hysterically, realizing that he would spend his best years behind bars while I built an empire without him.
