Chapter 1 - The Echo of the FlatlineWhen my heart stopped on the delivery table, my husband didn't just lose a wife—he opened the doors to a nightmare he couldn't control.

The high-pitched, continuous drone of the EKG flatline sliced through the sterile air of the delivery room like a physical blade.
"V-fib! She's in ventricular fibrillation!" the lead nurse shrieked, her voice cracking with terror. "Blood pressure is zero! She's hemorrhaging violently!"
The calm, arrogant mask Cameron had worn for the past six hours dissolved in less than three seconds. His face drained of all color, turning a sickening, waxy shade of gray. His eyes dilated, fixed in horror on the pool of deep crimson spreading rapidly across the white sheets beneath me.
"Amelia?" Cameron gasped, his voice barely a breath. His gloved hands shook so violently he dropped his surgical clamps onto the tile floor with a loud CLANG. "Amelia, wake up! Look at me!"
He reached out to touch my face, but a firm hand shoved him back.
Dr. Marcus Vance, the hospital’s Chief of Surgery and my mentor of ten years, had kicked open the double doors of the delivery room, flanked by an entire trauma response team. Marcus had heard the emergency code over the loudspeaker and sprinted down three flights of stairs.
"Get your hands off her, Bennett!" Marcus roared, his eyes burning with absolute fury as he shoved Cameron away from the bed. "Charge the paddles to 200! Now!"
"Dr. Vance, I'm the attending—" Cameron stammered, stumbling backward against the silver trays.
"You are a criminal who just tortured his own wife!" Marcus shouted, grabbing the defibrillator paddles. "Clear!"
THUMP.
My lifeless body jolted off the mattress as the electric current surged through my chest. The line remained flat.
"Clear!" Marcus shouted again, sweat pouring down his forehead. "Come on, Amelia! Don't you dare leave your son with this monster! CLEAR!"
THUMP.
A faint, erratic spike fluttered across the monitor.
"Sinus rhythm restored, but barely!" Nurse Elena yelled, tears streaming down her face. "She's losing massive amounts of blood from a severe uterine rupture! She needs an immediate emergency hysterectomy and massive transfusion, or she won't last ten minutes!"
"Prep Operating Room 4!" Marcus ordered, pushing the gurney himself toward the doors. "Move! Move!"
As the trauma team wheeled my unresponsive body into the corridor, Cameron stood frozen in the center of the delivery room, his expensive surgical scrubs soaked in my blood. His breathing was fast and shallow, his hands trembling uncontrollably.
Beside him, Sophie, the intern who had staged the entire incident, stepped forward. She carefully wiped her eyes, putting on a delicate, frightened voice.
"Dr. Bennett..." Sophie whimpered, reaching out to touch his arm. "I'm so sorry... I didn't know Dr. Grant's body was so weak. You were only trying to teach her a lesson... You did nothing wrong..."
Cameron turned his head slowly to look at her. For the first time, without the veil of his ego blinding him, he noticed the subtle, calculating glint in her eyes. He noticed the lack of genuine fear on her face.
Then he looked down at the floor—at the shattered steel bed rail I had snapped with my bare hands in sheer agony, and at the bloody handprint I had left behind.
A wave of crushing, suffocating reality hit Cameron squarely in the chest.
10 pounds, 4 ounces.
The scale near the pediatric station glowed brightly with the newborn's weight. A giant baby. A shattered pelvis. A ruptured uterus. And he had forced her to deliver naturally—without an epidural—all because an intern had shed a few fake tears over a spilled tray.

Cameron’s knees buckled.
He fell heavily to his knees right in the middle of my blood, clutching his head, letting out a raw, choked sob as the weight of his unspeakable cruelty crushed his soul.
