Chapter 2 - The Awakening in the ShadowsThey thought they had broken me forever, but they forgot one crucial detail: I didn't just survive the trauma room—I owned it.

Three days later.
The scent of antiseptic and cheap coffee filled the quiet sanctuary of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
I opened my eyes slowly. The ceiling lights were dimmed, casting soft shadows across the room. My throat felt like it was lined with glass, and a dull, deep ache pulsed through my abdomen. An IV line dripped synthetic painkillers into my arm, while a heart monitor beeped rhythmically beside my bed.
A steady, reassuring sound. Alive.
"Don't try to sit up," a deep voice said gently from the corner.
I turned my head with effort. Marcus Vance sat in a leather armchair, a thick manila folder resting on his lap. His eyes were red-rimmed from exhaustion, but when he saw me looking at him, a profound look of relief washed over his face.
"Marcus..." My voice was a barely audible rasp. "My... my baby..."
"He's safe, Amelia," Marcus said softly, standing up and pouring a small cup of water, offering me a straw. "He's in the neonatal ICU. Ten pounds, four ounces. A big, healthy boy. He suffered minor shoulder dystocia during the delivery, but his brain activity is perfect. He’s breathing on his own."
Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and fast. "Thank God..."
"You lost four liters of blood," Marcus continued, his tone turning grave and quiet. "I had to perform a total hysterectomy to save your life. Your uterus was torn completely through. If I had been two minutes later... you wouldn't be here."
I closed my eyes, letting the reality settle over me. I could no longer have children. The husband I had trusted with my life had stripped that choice away from me out of spite, vanity, and malice.
"Cameron?" I asked, my voice cold, void of any emotion.
Marcus’s jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white against the folder. "He's been suspended from clinical duties pending a board investigation. He’s been sleeping in his office for seventy-two hours, begging the nurses to let him see you. He claims it was a 'medical misjudgment' caused by stress."
A bitter, cold smile touched my lips. "A misjudgment?"
"The nurses spoke up, Amelia," Marcus said, pulling out a stack of signed affidavits from the folder. "Nurse Elena and two others came straight to my office that night. They gave sworn statements confirming that Cameron explicitly ignored hospital protocols, turned off your epidural as a punitive measure, and refused emergency intervention despite severe fetal and maternal distress."
"What about Sophie?" I asked.
"The intern?" Marcus scoffed with disgust. "She's been trying to play the innocent victim, claiming you assaulted her in the labor room. Cameron actually backed her story at first to cover his own ass."
I looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline. For seven years, I had built Cameron’s career. I had edited his research papers, introduced him to major donors, and stepped back into the shadows so he could become the Chief of Surgery candidate. I had poured my heart, my intellect, and my youth into making him a king.
And he had almost buried me in a shallow grave for it.
"Marcus," I said, looking back at my mentor, my eyes turning into sharp, polished steel. "I want my medical records sealed under emergency privacy protocols. I don't want Cameron to know I'm awake."
May you like
Marcus leaned forward, a dark spark of approval in his eyes. "What are you planning?"
"He wanted to play God in my delivery room," I whispered, the words carrying the cold fury of a woman reborn from the ashes. "Now I'm going to strip his altar bare."
