Chapter 5 - THE TRIBUNAL OF MANHATTANSix weeks later.

The Federal Courthouse in Lower Manhattan was packed with reporters, corporate lawyers, and high-society observers for the preliminary hearing of The United States v. Julian Mercer.

Julian sat at the defense table dressed in a plain navy suit provided by a public defender. Beside him sat Dr. Victor Vance—his former corporate accountant—and three co-conspirators who had helped him hide assets during our divorce.

Serena Blake sat in the back row of the gallery, wearing dark sunglasses, completely ignored by the media as she waited to testify under a grant of immunity.

I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Adrian and my father, whom Adrian had flown in from Oklahoma in his private jet. My father, now healthy and wearing a comfortable suit, sat with his arm around my shoulders, his eyes shining with fatherly pride.

"You did good, baby," my father whispered into my hair. "Your mama would be so proud of you today."

"Thanks, Dad," I smiled, squeezing his hand.

When Victoria Vance took the stand as the primary forensic witness for Vale Capital, she presented a masterclass in financial exposure.

Slide by slide, document by document, Victoria showed the court how Julian Mercer had systematically looted thirty million dollars from his own company, falsified invoices, and transferred funds to offshore shell accounts during our divorce to prevent me from receiving my rightful fifty percent share of our marital estate.

The judge, a formidable federal magistrate named Honorable Sarah Jenkins, peered over her glasses at Julian, her face grim.

"Mr. Mercer," Judge Jenkins said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The evidence presented by Vale Capital and Ms. Carter is overwhelming. You did not merely commit corporate fraud; you engaged in a malicious, calculated campaign of financial abuse against your former business partner and spouse."

Julian hung his head, unable to look up.

"It is the order of this court," Judge Jenkins ruled, slamming her gavel down with a sharp CRACK, "that all remaining personal and corporate assets belonging to Julian Mercer be permanently seized and transferred into a victim restitution trust managed by Ms. Elena Carter. Furthermore, Mr. Mercer will remain in federal custody pending trial, with bail set at twenty-five million dollars."

The courtroom erupted into a flurry of motion as federal marshals stepped forward, pulling Julian’s arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they led him away toward the holding cells, Julian turned his head, searching the gallery one last time until his eyes met mine.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply placed my hand over my baby bump, leaned my head against Adrian’s shoulder, and watched the man who tried to destroy me disappear behind the heavy steel doors of the justice system.
