Chapter 4 - THE DESPERATE BEGGARBy 8:00 a.m. the following morning, Manhattan was engulfed in a financial firestorm.

I sat in the sunlit breakfast nook of Adrian’s sprawling TriBeCa penthouse, sipping a cup of warm decaffeinated tea while watching the news on a wall-mounted screen.
Adrian walked in wearing a tailored charcoal suit, dropping a fresh bouquet of white peonies onto the table before leaning down to kiss my forehead and then pressing a gentle kiss against my growing belly.
"How is our little CFO doing this morning?" Adrian smiled warmly, sitting across from me.
"She’s kicking," I laughed softly, laying my hand over my bump. "I think she likes the Bloomberg terminal updates."
"She’s going to run Wall Street before she’s ten," Adrian chuckled, taking a sip of his black coffee. "By the way, there is a man standing in the lobby downstairs. My head of security says he’s been there since five in the morning."
I didn't need to ask who it was. "Julian?"
"He looks like he slept in a dumpster," Adrian said neutrally. "Security won't let him near the elevators without your permission. Do you want me to have him removed by the police?"
I thought about it for a moment. I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the Hudson River, feeling a deep, profound sense of closure rising inside me.
"No," I said quietly. "Let him come up. Let's finish this."
Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed, and the doors opened into our foyer.
Julian Mercer stepped out.
The contrast between the man who had mocked me at the gala sixteen hours ago and the man standing in front of me now was devastating. His tuxedo was crumpled, his tie was gone, his hair was wild, and his hands were trembling uncontrollably.
He took three steps into the grand living room, stopped, and fell directly onto his knees on the polished wooden floor.
"Elena!" Julian sobbed openly, burying his face in his hands. "Please! I’m begging you! Vale Capital filed the foreclosures an hour ago! My bank accounts are frozen! The board of directors just held an emergency meeting and stripped me of my CEO title!"
I stood near the marble kitchen island, holding my tea cup, watching him without a shred of anger.
"You brought this on yourself, Julian," I said calmly. "You committed wire fraud. You stole from your own company to fund a lifestyle you couldn't afford."
"Serena left me!" Julian cried out, looking up with tears streaming down his face. "She took her jewelry, packed her bags, and left for Los Angeles at dawn! She called me a pathetic fraud! She was using me, Elena! She never cared about me!"
"And you were using me, Julian," I replied, my voice dropping into a soft, piercing register. "You used my intellect to build your fortune, and when you thought you didn't need me anymore, you discarded me like trash."
Julian crawled forward a few inches on his knees, his hands outstretched.
"I was stupid! I was blind!" he whimpered desperately. "I love you, Elena! I’ve always loved you! We can fix this! We can kick Adrian out, restart Nexus, and rebuild everything! Remember Chicago? Remember our little apartment? You loved me!"
Adrian walked slowly out of his study, stepping beside me, his tall, imposing presence casting a long shadow over Julian on the floor.
Julian looked up at Adrian, then at me, seeing the absolute, unshakeable bond between us—a bond built on mutual respect, deep love, and undeniable trust.
"Julian," I said softly, looking down at my ex-husband with finality. "I stopped loving you the moment you traded our honesty for applause. You aren't kneeling here because you love me. You're kneeling here because you lost your money."
I turned to Adrian's security guard standing near the elevator.

"Escort Mr. Mercer off the property," I ordered gently. "And tell Victoria Vance to proceed with the federal disclosures."
As the security guards pulled Julian to his feet and led him toward the elevator, his pathetic, echoing cries filled the penthouse until the steel doors closed, sealing him out of my life forever.
