Chapter 3 - THE PRIVATE AUDITMidnight at the Plaza Hotel.

The main gala had transitioned into an exclusive, invite-only after-party on the penthouse terrace overlooking Central Park.
While Serena was surrounded by lower-tier influencers near the ice sculptures, trying desperately to repair the narrative after my dramatic entrance, Julian was tucked into a dark velvet booth in the VIP lounge, drinking scotch at a dangerous pace.
His phone was buzzing incessantly on the glass table—notifications from his Chief Financial Officer, alerts from financial journalists, and private messages from board members.
I walked into the lounge accompanied by Adrian and our chief legal counsel, Victoria Vance.
When Julian saw me approach, he slammed his glass onto the table, scotch spilling over his silver cufflinks.
"Elena," Julian growled, standing up, his eyes bloodshot. "I don't know how you tricked Adrian into whatever this is... but if you think you can show up in Manhattan and ruin my engagement night without consequences, you're insane!"
"Sit down, Mr. Mercer," Adrian said, his voice flat, dropping a thick leather folder directly onto the table in front of Julian's glass.
Julian frowned, looking between Adrian and me. "What is this?"
"That, Julian," I said softly, sitting down in the armchair across from him while Adrian stood behind me, laying his hands reassuringly on my shoulders, "is the complete forensic audit of Mercer Dynamics for the past twenty-four months."
Julian’s face twitched. "You... you can't audit my company! You signed a non-disclosure agreement during our divorce!"
"She didn't audit you, Julian," Victoria Vance interrupted smoothly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a certified federal document. "Vale Capital audited you. As of four o'clock this afternoon, Vale Capital acquired sixty-two percent of the senior debt notes issued by First Manhattan Bank—the bank funding your new expansion project."
Julian froze. His breathing became shallow, rapid. "What... what are you talking about?"
"It means Adrian owns your debt, Julian," I explained, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table. "And as the Chief Investment Officer of Vale Capital—a position I have held privately for the past fourteen months—I have exercised our contractual right to inspect your corporate ledgers."
Julian’s jaw dropped. The color drained from his face until he looked like a ghost.
"Chief... Investment Officer?" he whispered, staring at me as if I had suddenly transformed into an alien being. "You've been working for Vale Capital?"
"I built the risk algorithms that allowed Adrian to short your competitor's stock last spring," I smiled gently. "I also discovered that over the past six months, you have been using company money to buy luxury real estate in Miami, leased a private jet under Serena's name, and falsified your quarterly revenue reports to secure another forty million dollars in loans."
Julian stumbled back into his velvet booth, his knees giving out.
"Elena... please," he stuttered, his arrogant composure completely shattering. "We... we were married for four years! You wouldn't destroy me over financial irregularities! It was just cash flow management! Every tech startup does it!"
"It isn't cash flow management, Julian," Adrian stated coldly, leaning over the table. "It's grand larceny, federal wire fraud, and securities manipulation. And my wife-to-be has absolute authority over whether Vale Capital demands immediate repayment of those notes tomorrow morning at nine o'clock."
Julian looked at my face, searching for a single grain of the soft, forgiving girl who used to stay up until three in the morning making him coffee in Chicago.
He found nothing.
My eyes were clear, dark, and utterly unyielding.
"You called me broken, disposable, and childless, Julian," I whispered, touching my belly. "You took my hard work, claimed it as your own, and tried to exile me from the world we built together. But you forgot one thing."
May you like
"W-what?" Julian whimpered, tears of sheer terror welling in his eyes.
"You were the face of Mercer Dynamics," I said, standing up gracefully, smoothing down my black velvet gown. "I was the brain. And tonight, the brain is cutting off the head."
