My phone buzzed on the wooden porch railing.
I picked it up. It was a text message from Victoria Vance, my attorney and dear friend.
“Final asset liquidation paperwork went through this morning, Evelyn. Everything is officially settled. You are 100% free. How are things at the new place?”
I smiled, typing back a quick response:
“The air is clean, the water is calm, and the only kicks around here are the ones I teach in class. Thanks for everything, Victoria.”
I set the phone down and walked to the edge of the porch, wrapping my arms around myself as a cool morning breeze swept across the lake.
