Chapter 4 - Unraveling the EmpireWith Mason in holding and Linda facing criminal conspiracy charges, the glittering illusion of the Carter family's supposed wealth and high-society standing began to crumble like dry clay.

That afternoon, I met with my attorney, Victoria Vance, in her glass-walled office overlooking the city skyline. Victoria had spent the last two decades handling high-net-worth divorces and corporate fraud cases. When she laid out the financial audit of Mason and Linda's assets on her mahogany desk, even I was shocked by the depth of their deception.
"It wasn't just about control, Evelyn," Victoria explained, sliding a thick stack of bank statements across the table. "Mason and Linda were drowning in massive speculative real estate debts. When Mason married you, their primary objective wasn't companionship—it was liquidation. They intended to absorb your salary, drain your personal savings account, and use your credit profile to bail out Linda's failing investment properties."
I flipped through the pages, my eyes scanning the unauthorized wire transfers, hidden credit lines opened in my name without my consent, and forged authorization signatures on joint loan documents.
"So the entire courtship was a scam," I murmured, staring at a forged signature dated two weeks before our wedding.
"A textbook financial grooming operation," Victoria nodded. "They thought they had targeted a naive, compliant professional who would quietly accept abuse while funding their lifestyle. They had no idea they were poking a sleeping dragon."
Victoria smiled, leaning back in her leather chair. "Now for the fun part. Because we caught them red-handed with criminal extortion and financial fraud, we can fast-track an emergency annulment based on fraudulent inducement and bad faith, bypassing the standard statutory waiting period entirely. Furthermore, we can freeze all joint assets, place an immediate lien on Linda's primary residence to recover legal fees, and pursue full punitive damages."
"Let's do it," I said without hesitation. "I want every single cent they tried to steal returned, and I want a clean, permanent severance from both of them."
"Consider it done," Victoria replied, handing me a sleek black fountain pen. "Sign here, Counselor."
As I signed my name across the legal documents, a profound sense of lightness washed over me. The nightmare was ending, and justice was finally taking its course.
However, Linda Carter was not the type of woman to go down without a fight.
That evening, as I returned to my temporary apartment—having packed my belongings and changed the locks on the house—my phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
I swiped the screen and pressed accept.
"Evelyn," Linda’s voice came through the speaker. It was no longer screeching or arrogant; instead, it sounded raspy, desperate, and laced with venomous panic. "We need to talk."
"There is nothing for us to talk about, Linda," I said calmly, unlocking my apartment door. "Your son is facing felony charges, and you're next on the list of indictments. Speak to your defense attorney."
"Wait! Don't hang up!" Linda cried out. "If you drop the charges—if you agree to a quiet settlement out of court—I'll give you something you actually want. Something Mason has been hiding from you since before you walked down the aisle."
I paused, my hand resting on the door handle. "What are you talking about?"
"Mason's past," Linda whispered fiercely over the line. "The real reason his first fiancé mysteriously broke off their wedding three weeks before the ceremony two years ago. It wasn't because she cheated, Evelyn. It was because she found out what Mason really is—and what I helped him cover up."
A cold shiver ran down my spine.
"Meet me at the diner on 4th Street in twenty minutes," Linda hissed. "Come alone. If you want to know the true monster you married, you'll be there."
