Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs Shut

By Friday morning, the sixty-eighth floor of Northstar Technologies was a war zone.

Maya sat at her desk, staring blindly at a spreadsheet of server utilization metrics while her mind screamed in silent panic. She hadn't slept a wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Nathan’s face on the riverbank, heard his desperate warning, and felt the crushing weight of the trap closing around her.

She had tried to resign at 8:00 AM, but human resources had placed her account under an immediate administrative freeze, citing an "internal compliance audit."

At 10:15 AM, the glass double doors of the senior analysis division swung open with a loud, aggressive bang.

Two men in sharp charcoal suits, wearing federal compliance badges clipped to their lapels, marched directly down the center aisle. Behind them walked Julian Vance—a taller, leaner, and far more polished version of Nathan, wearing an immaculate bespoke navy suit and an expression of cold, venomous triumph.

The entire floor fell into a suffocating, dead silence.

Julian stopped directly in front of Maya’s cubicle, leaning his hands against the partition and looking down at her with a condescending, predatory smirk.

"Maya Bennett, I presume?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with oily amusement. "I’m Julian Vance, Executive Vice President of Strategic Operations. I’m afraid you need to come with these gentlemen immediately."

Maya slowly stood up, her legs shaking, her chin held high despite the sheer terror clawing at her throat. "On what grounds? I haven't done anything illegal."

"Haven't you?" Julian chuckled softly, pulling a thick manila folder from his briefcase and tossing it onto her desk. "Unauthorized data exfiltration, insider trading collusion with the chief executive officer, and systematic manipulation of quarterly forecasting ledgers to artificially inflate stock valuations. Federal investigators have already seized your corporate terminal."

"That's a lie!" Maya snapped, her voice echoing across the silent floor. "Those documents were fabricated!"

"Tell it to the SEC investigators waiting in the ground-floor interrogation room," Julian sneered, stepping closer. "My dear stepbrother thought he could protect a little nobody from Brooklyn by hiding her behind a fancy title and a corner office. But in the real world, Maya, pawns get sacrificed so the kings can fall."

Before the federal compliance officers could step forward to grab her arms, the private elevator at the end of the hall dinged with a sharp, violent chime.

The doors flew open.

Nathan Carter stepped out.

He wasn't wearing his usual immaculate corporate composure. His tie was slightly loosened, his collar unbuttoned, and his dark, storm-gray eyes burned with a lethal, terrifying fury that made every single person in the room—including the federal agents—take an involuntary step backward.

"Step away from her, Julian," Nathan commanded, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly cold it felt as though the temperature on the entire floor had plummeted twenty degrees.

Julian turned around, flashing a smug, confident grin. "Ah, right on time, brother. I was just escorting your little girlfriend down to federal holding. Looks like your reign at Northstar is finally coming to an ignominious end."

Nathan didn't yell. He didn't rush forward. He walked with the slow, terrifying deliberation of an executioner stepping up to the block.

"You brought federal agents into my building with forged compliance warrants," Nathan said softly, stopping two feet away from his stepbrother. "Which means you officially violated federal statute 18 U.S.C. Section 1001 by submitting fraudulent documents to a government agency."

Julian’s smug smile flickered for a microsecond. "What are you talking about? My documents are airtight—"

"Your documents were signed by a compliance officer who retired to Boca Raton three months ago," Nathan interrupted, pulling a pristine legal document out of his inner jacket pocket and tossing it onto Julian’s chest. "And your offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands—the one you used to fund the forgery operation—was seized by federal marshals twenty minutes ago pursuant to an emergency warrant signed by Judge Miller at my personal request."

The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. The arrogance vanished, replaced by sudden, blind panic. "That's impossible—you couldn't have known—"

"I knew you were coming before you even crossed state lines, Julian," Nathan said, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding authority. "Because unlike you, I don't build my empire on manipulation. I build it on truth."

He turned past his stunned stepbrother, ignoring the federal agents as they hastily backed away, and walked straight into Maya’s cubicle.

May you like

He didn't care that fifty employees were watching. He didn't care about corporate decorum, stock prices, or public optics. He reached out, grabbed Maya by the shoulders, and pulled her straight into his arms, burying his face in her hair as if she were the only real thing left in a world of ash.

"I've got you," Nathan whispered fiercely against her ear, his voice thick with uncontainable emotion. "You're safe. It's over."
