Chapter 1 - The Shadow Behind the Frosted Glass

The fluorescent hum of the Northstar Technologies cafeteria always felt like an interrogation room on Mondays, but today the lights seemed particularly blinding. Maya Bennett stared down at the half-eaten green salad on her plate, her fingers white-knuckling the plastic fork. Across the table, Harper sat with a look of quiet, unyielding empathy, waiting patiently as the heavy secret Maya had carried like lead in her chest finally dissolved into the heavy afternoon air.
"I’m twenty-eight," Maya whispered, the confession tasting like ash on her tongue. "And I’ve never been with anyone. Not once."
The words felt terrifying once they left her mouth, exposed to the harsh reality of an office full of colleagues who gossiped about weekend hookups over coffee breaks. She expected Harper to look at her with pity or awkward disbelief. Instead, her best friend simply reached across the table, covering Maya’s shaking hand with her own.
"Why would I judge you?" Harper asked softly.
Maya looked down, fighting the hot prickle of tears behind her eyelids. "Because everyone else seems to know how this works. Dating. Relationships. Love. Every time things get serious, I panic. I keep waiting for something that probably doesn’t exist."
She took a shaky breath, letting the raw truth pour out. "What are you waiting for?" Harper prompted gently.
"Someone who wants my heart before my body. Someone who makes me feel safe. Someone who sees me, not what he can get from me," Maya murmured, her voice cracking. "I don't want my first time to be something I regret. I want it to mean something."
Neither of them knew that ten feet away, separated only by the frosted glass of the private executive conference room, a multi-million-dollar acquisition deal hung in the balance.
Inside that room sat Nathan Carter.
To the business world, he was the ruthless founder and CEO of Northstar Technologies—a man who swallowed failing tech startups before breakfast and left venture capitalists trembling in their custom-tailored suits. He was supposed to be initialing the final pages of a binding contract that would expand Northstar's global footprint by forty percent.
Instead, his heavy gold fountain pen had stopped moving completely across the paper.
Nathan sat frozen at the head of the long mahogany table, his dark eyes fixed blindly on the document while his legal counsel coughed nervously. But Nathan wasn't reading the clauses. Through the frosted glass, a soft, trembling voice had pierced the thick boardroom walls, slipping past the soundproofing and echoing straight into his chest.
Someone who wants my heart before my body.
Nathan had spent his entire adult life surrounded by people who wanted his name, his bank accounts, or his power. Women threw themselves at his feet in Manhattan galas and Chicago rooftop bars, offering their bodies like currency to gain access to his empire. He was an apex predator of the corporate world, feared and respected, yet profoundly, bone-deep lonely.
When Maya’s confession drifted through the glass, it didn't sound like weakness to him. It sounded like the only real thing in a world built entirely of plastic smiles and hidden agendas.
Slowly, Nathan set his pen down.
"Mr. Carter?" his lead attorney asked, blinking in confusion. "Is there an issue with paragraph nine?"

Nathan stood up, towering over the table, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute authority. "The meeting is adjourned," he said coldly, his voice vibrating with a strange, dark intensity. "Reschedule for Thursday. I have matters to attend to."
Without another word, Nathan turned and walked out of the conference room, leaving a room full of stunned executives staring after him. But as he crossed the executive floor, his gaze lingered for a fraction of a second on the cafeteria doors. He didn't know her name yet—not officially. But as he stepped into his private elevator, he knew one thing with absolute certainty: he was going to find out.
