Chapter 6 - The Sabotage and the StandThe brutal reality of Chicago hit us like a freight train the moment we stepped off the private jet on Wednesday morning.

Marcus was waiting on the tarmac, his face grim, holding a tablet.

"Sir. Miss Bennett," Marcus greeted us, his voice tense. "The situation has escalated."

He handed the tablet to Nathan. I leaned in to look, and my blood ran ice cold.

Victoria hadn't just gone to the press. She had leaked fabricated, highly sophisticated documents to the financial regulatory board, accusing Nathan of funneling Northstar capital into offshore accounts under my name. The headlines were devastating: Billionaire CEO Embezzles Millions for Secret Mistress. Northstar Faces Federal Probe.

"She forged the financial trails using my department's access codes," I realized, feeling a wave of nausea wash over me. "She's framing me as an accomplice to corporate fraud to force the board to oust you immediately."

Nathan’s face was an impenetrable mask of pure fury, but his hands were steady. He handed the tablet back to Marcus.

"Where is the board?" Nathan asked coldly.

"Convened in the primary conference room, sir. The emergency vote to strip you of your CEO title and force the Sterling merger is scheduled for noon. You have one hour."

"And Victoria?"

"She's in the room, sir. Gloating."

Nathan turned to me. The tender, gentle lover from the lake house was gone, replaced entirely by the apex predator of the corporate world. But when he looked at me, his eyes were clear and fiercely protective.

"Maya, I want you to go to my penthouse with Marcus. You'll be safe there while I handle this."

"No," I said, the word slipping out before I could think.

Nathan blinked in surprise. "Maya, it's a war zone in there. The federal authorities might be waiting in the lobby."

"She used my name, Nathan," I said, a sudden, burning anger replacing my fear. I thought about the twenty-eight years I had spent being quiet, being the good girl, staying out of the way. I thought about the way Victoria had looked at me, assuming I was weak, assuming I was just collateral damage. "She used my access codes. She tried to frame me to destroy the man I love. I am not hiding in a penthouse while she tries to take everything from you. I am a data analyst. I know the Northstar server architecture better than anyone on that board. Take me with you."

Nathan stared at me for a long moment, a slow, incredibly proud smile spreading across his face. He didn't argue. He reached out, lacing his fingers tightly with mine.

"Let's go take our company back."

We rode the elevator to the executive floor in tense silence. When the double mahogany doors of the primary boardroom swung open, the chaos inside instantly died down.

Twelve board members sat around the massive glass table, looking panicked. At the head of the table, sitting in Nathan’s chair, was Victoria Sterling.

"Nathan," Victoria smiled, leaning back in the leather chair, looking like a venomous snake about to strike. "So kind of you to join your own execution. And you brought the accomplice. Bold move, considering the feds are drafting your arrest warrants as we speak."

"Get out of my chair, Victoria," Nathan said, his voice echoing with absolute authority as he walked to the head of the table.

"The vote has already commenced, Nathan," sneered Davis, the lead corrupt board member. "You are officially suspended pending federal investigation. Your security clearance is revoked."

"Is it?" Nathan asked smoothly. He pulled a small, black USB drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the glass table. It slid precisely, stopping right in front of Davis. "Maya."

I stepped forward, plugging a secondary drive I had prepared on the jet into the boardroom's main projection system. I didn't shake. I didn't hesitate. I typed a rapid sequence of override commands, bypassing the board's lockout, and projected the data onto the massive screen behind Victoria.

"What is this?" Victoria demanded, her smile faltering as lines of code and bank transfers flooded the screen.

"That," I said clearly, my voice ringing out across the room, "is the digital footprint of the fabricated financial documents. Miss Sterling was clever, routing the IP addresses through European servers to make it look like an offshore account. Unfortunately for her, she used the Sterling Global proprietary encryption key to seal the files. An encryption key that I, as a Northstar data analyst, flagged in our defensive firewall three days ago."

The board members gasped, leaning in to read the undeniable, irrefutable proof of Victoria's digital forgery.

"Furthermore," Nathan cut in, his voice like a whip, "the audio files currently playing through your secure emails are recordings of Davis and three other board members accepting direct wire transfers from Sterling Global in exchange for sabotaging Northstar's supply chains. Corporate espionage, bribery, and fraud."

Victoria stood up, her face pale with absolute terror. "This is illegal! You hacked my servers!"

"No, Victoria," Nathan smiled coldly. "You attacked my servers, and my brilliant analyst trapped you in the act. The FBI is indeed in the lobby. But they aren't here for me."

Right on cue, the boardroom doors opened, and four federal agents stepped into the room.

"Victoria Sterling? Arthur Davis?" the lead agent announced, flashing a badge. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and extortion."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Davis tried to run but was immediately tackled by Marcus. Victoria stood frozen, her aristocratic composure completely shattered. As the federal agents placed handcuffs on her wrists, she turned her venomous, panicked eyes toward Nathan.

"You're a fool, Nathan!" she screamed as they dragged her away. "You chose a nobody over an empire! You'll regret this!"

"I already have my empire," Nathan replied quietly, turning his back on her as the doors closed, silencing her screams.

The remaining board members sat in stunned, terrified silence.

Nathan walked to the head of the table, pulling out the executive chair, and turned to look at the men who had tried to ruin him.

"As of this moment, the board is dissolved," Nathan stated, his voice ringing with absolute dominance. "I am retaining total private control of Northstar Technologies. Any objections?"

Silence.

Nathan nodded. "Good. Now get out of my boardroom."
