Chapter 2 - The Viper in the LobbyThe next morning, the atmosphere at Northstar Technologies felt like the air before a massive thunderstorm. The moment I stepped off the elevator onto the junior analyst floor, I could feel the static electricity of office gossip vibrating through the cubicles.

"Did you hear?" Harper whispered frantically as soon as I sat down at my desk, rolling her chair over to mine. "The Sterling Global merger is suspended indefinitely. Wall Street is losing its collective mind. Stock prices dropped four percent this morning, and the board of directors called an emergency meeting at noon."

I kept my eyes glued to my monitor, pretending to review a spreadsheet while my heart hammered against my ribs. "Really? That’s… big news."

Harper narrowed her eyes, leaning in closer. "Maya Bennett. You've been acting weird for three weeks. Ever since Nathan Carter randomly showed up and escorted you to the executive floor. What is going on?"

I bit the inside of my cheek. I wanted to tell Harper everything. I wanted to tell her that the billionaire CEO had held my hand by the river and promised to protect me. But Nathan and I had agreed that absolute secrecy was my best defense until he could neutralize Victoria and the rogue board members.

"Nothing is going on," I lied, hating the way my voice squeaked. "Mr. Carter just needed my help with a localized data discrepancy. That’s all."

Harper didn't look convinced, but before she could interrogate me further, a sudden, suffocating silence fell over the entire department floor. The usual clatter of keyboards and low hum of chatter vanished instantly.

I looked up.

Walking out of the main elevator bank was a woman who commanded the space like a conquering queen. She was breathtakingly beautiful, with sharp, aristocratic features, piercing icy-blue eyes, and perfectly styled platinum-blonde hair. She wore a tailored white designer suit that probably cost more than my entire yearly salary, and her heels clicked against the polished floor with the rhythmic precision of a ticking time bomb.

Victoria Sterling had arrived.

Trailing behind her were three men in dark suits—Northstar board members who looked simultaneously terrified and entirely subservient to her.

"Who is that?" Harper breathed, shrinking slightly in her chair.

"Victoria," I whispered, my blood running cold.

She wasn't heading toward the executive elevators. She was walking directly through the main bullpen of the analyst department, her eyes scanning the rows of cubicles with a look of utter disdain. She was hunting. She knew Nathan had stopped the signing because of something—or someone—in this building, and she was looking for a crack in his armor.

As she passed my row, her eyes snagged on me.

I froze. I tried to look back down at my screen, but the sheer weight of her predatory gaze held me pinned. Victoria stopped walking. The board members behind her nearly bumped into one another.

"You," Victoria said, her voice smooth, cultured, and laced with absolute poison.

She stepped closer to my desk, looking down her nose at my modest beige blouse and simple cardigan. She took in my messy bun, the lack of designer labels, and the nervous tremor in my hands.

"What is your name?" she demanded.

"Maya Bennett," I replied, forcing myself to look her in the eye, remembering Nathan's promise that I was not alone. "Junior Data Analyst."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into slits. She leaned down, resting one perfectly manicured hand on the partition of my cubicle. Up close, her perfume was suffocatingly sweet, like rotting flowers.

"Maya Bennett," she repeated softly, testing the syllables on her tongue. "Tell me, Maya. Have you noticed any… operational inefficiencies in the executive branch lately? Any distractions causing our esteemed CEO to neglect his primary duties?"

She knew. She didn't have proof, but her instincts were zeroing in on me like a heat-seeking missile.

Before I could answer, a voice rang out across the floor, echoing with a chilling, absolute authority that made every single person in the room flinch.

"Victoria."

Nathan Carter stood at the end of the aisle. He wasn't wearing his usual calm, composed mask. The man standing there looked like a warlord ready to burn the building to the ground. His dark suit emphasized the broad, tense line of his shoulders, and his eyes were locked on Victoria with a hatred so pure it practically crackled in the air.

Victoria straightened up, a sickeningly sweet smile spreading across her lips. "Nathan, darling. I was just taking a tour of the lower levels. Getting to know the little people who keep the gears turning."

"My employees are not a tourist attraction," Nathan said, his voice deadly quiet as he closed the distance between them. He didn't look at me—a calculated move to protect me—but he positioned himself subtly between Victoria and my desk, shielding me from her view. "And you do not have security clearance for this floor. You are trespassing."

"Trespassing?" Victoria laughed, a harsh, brittle sound. "Darling, by the time the board meeting is over this afternoon, I'll own this floor. I'll own this building. And I'll own you."

"We'll see about that," Nathan replied smoothly. "Marcus."

His head of security, a towering man who had suddenly appeared from the stairwell, stepped forward.

"Escort Miss Sterling to the boardroom," Nathan ordered coldly. "If she steps off the direct path, have her physically removed from the premises."

Victoria’s smile vanished, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "You are making a catastrophic mistake, Nathan. Whoever you're protecting… whatever pathetic little secret made you walk out of that signing room… I will find it. And I will crush it."

She turned on her heel and stormed toward the executive elevators, the terrified board members scurrying after her like obedient dogs.

Nathan stood there for a long moment, ensuring she was gone. Finally, he turned slightly, his eyes meeting mine for a fraction of a second. The message in his gaze was clear, burning with a fierce, unwavering promise: I will not let her touch you.

My heart hammered in my chest. The war had officially begun, and Victoria Sterling had just drawn first blood.
