Chapter 7 - The Sunset Over the LakeOne year to the day after the disaster at the rental estate, I stood on the back deck of my newly purchased lakefront home in Wisconsin.

It wasn't a rental. It was mine. Every brick, every beam, every square foot of the sprawling modern estate overlooking the water belonged entirely to me, purchased outright without a single dollar of joint debt or shared liability.
The April air was crisp, clean, and refreshing.
Inside the house, soft jazz played from the integrated sound system, and the kitchen counter was set with an exquisite, candlelit dinner for two.
Julian was inside finishing up a work call before dinner, his laughter drifting faintly through the open french doors.
I walked down the wooden steps of the deck toward the edge of the property—stopping precisely twenty feet from the large, pristine, crystal-clear in-ground pool that shimmered under the fading amber light of the sunset.
I looked down at the water.
There were no crowds. No cruel laughter. No applause from people who took my kindness for weakness.
There was only peace.
I raised a glass of wine to the setting sun, whispering a quiet word of thanks to the woman I used to be—the woman who had survived the freezing water, stood up in her wet clothes, and decided she deserved an empire of her own.

The past was buried deep. The future was wide open.
And as Julian stepped out onto the deck, wrapping his arms warmly around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder, I knew with absolute certainty that the best chapter of my life was only just beginning.
