Chapter 6 - A Different Kind of EmpireBy midnight, the gala had transitioned into an intimate after-hours reception in the Drake’s private garden suite overlooking Lake Michigan.

The autumn wind was cool, carrying the fresh scent of the lake, but this time, I wasn’t shivering. I stood by the stone balustrade wrapped in a cashmere shawl, watching the distant lights of the city twinkle against the dark water.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind me.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Julian asked, handing me a fresh cup of sparkling water before leaning against the railing beside me.

I took the glass, smiling faintly as I looked out at the skyline.

“I was just thinking about how strange life is,” I confessed quietly. “Six months ago, I thought my entire world would end if my marriage fell apart. I believed my value was tied to how well I could manage someone else’s ego, how much I could finance their dreams while hiding in the background.”

Julian turned to face me, his expression attentive and respectful. “And now?”

“Now I realize I was just building a cage out of gold bars,” I said, turning to meet his eyes. “Breaking out of it hurt. But standing out here in the open air… it’s the most liberating feeling in the world.”

Julian smiled, his gaze holding mine with a depth that made my heart skip a gentle, unhurried beat.

“Well,” he murmured softly, raising his glass in a quiet toast, “for what it’s worth, Lauren… I think the world is a hell of a lot safer with you running the show.”

May you like

I clinked my glass against his, the clear, resonant ring echoing softly into the night air.

“To running the show,” I replied.
