Chapter 3 - Unraveling the EmpireThe fallout hit the Brooks family name like a tectonic shift. Within forty-eight hours, the digital flash drive I handed to Detective Nguyen had detonated across every major news outlet and social media platform in the country. The footage of Richard Brooks casually slipping the sedative into my champagne glass—captured from multiple synchronized security angles—was played on an endless loop on morning news programs.

Public sympathy morphed instantly into ferocious public outrage.
Madison, having recovered physically after a harrowing night in the ICU, was discharged into a media circus outside the hospital gates. Shielded by bodyguards and her weeping mother, she refused to make a statement, utterly shattered by the realization that the golden cage her father had built for her was actually a prison forged from manipulation and dark secrets.
Meanwhile, I had packed my bags, leaving the family estate behind for a secure, undisclosed apartment across the city. But breaking away physically was only the first phase. Richard’s legal team was fighting tooth and nail, filing injunctions, crying foul over chain-of-evidence technicalities, and attempting to paint the video as an AI-generated deepfake orchestrated by a "resentful, unstable younger daughter."
"They're throwing everything at the wall, Nat," my lawyer, Arthur Vance, said over a secure encrypted line as I paced my new living room. Arthur was a bulldog of an attorney who had spent thirty years dismantling corporate corruption. "Your father’s corporate board has already suspended him as CEO of Brooks Enterprises, but he’s liquidating overseas assets as we speak. If we don't freeze his personal accounts by tomorrow morning, he’ll board a private charter to Zurich and walk away scot-free."
"He can't," I said, staring out the floor-to-ceiling window at the glittering skyline of Hanoi. "He’s too arrogant. He thinks he can out-maneuver the legal system the same way he manipulated our entire family for decades."
"Arrogance is his Achilles' heel, yes, but we need a smoking gun regarding his financial motive," Arthur pressed. "Why target you so aggressively with a sedative on graduation night? There has to be something bigger than just family favoritism. Did you sign anything recently? Did he transfer assets under your name?"
My mind raced back through the years—the endless paperwork my father had forced me to sign "for tax purposes," the corporate trusts he claimed were set up for my future education, the mysterious legal documents he demanded I endorse the moment I turned eighteen.
"The family trust," I whispered, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. "When my grandfather died five years ago, he left a controlling thirty-percent stake in Brooks Enterprises directly to me—bypassing Richard entirely because he knew what kind of man my father was. But Richard tricked me into signing a power-of-attorney proxy clause on my eighteenth birthday, claiming it was a routine scholarship waiver."
"If that’s true," Arthur’s voice sharpened with sudden excitement, "then the sedative wasn't just a sadistic punishment or a twisted attempt to silence you... it was a premeditated incapacitation. If you had fallen unconscious or worse, the emergency medical protocols and subsequent legal probate would have declared you incapacitated, allowing him to legally seize full trusteeship of your thirty percent stake before midnight!"

The sheer depth of his malice chilled me to the bone. He hadn't just wanted to ruin my night; he had intended to steal my entire livelihood, locking me away in a medical facility or discrediting my mental stability permanently.
"Find the original trust documents, Arthur," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "I’m going to pay a visit to my mother and sister. It’s time they woke up from the fairytale."
