Chapter 7 - The Sovereign HorizonTwo years after the day I walked off Flight 1402, the Mediterranean sun beamed down brilliantly over the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy.

I stood on the private terrace of a breathtaking cliffside villa I had recently acquired as the European headquarters for Vance Analytics International. Below me, the deep blue waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea crashed gently against ancient rock formations, and the warm air was rich with the scent of lemon blossoms, sea salt, and blooming bougainvillea.
My laptop rested on the wrought-iron table beside a glass of freshly squeezed Sicilian orange juice, glowing softly with notifications from our global partnership directors in London, Zurich, and New York.
My phone chimed with an encrypted message from Marcus: “European market expansion audit just closed, Annalise. Vance Analytics has officially secured the primary advisory contract for the new transatlantic tech corridor. Market valuation of your independent equity trust is at an all-time high. Enjoy your holiday in Italy. You earned every single inch of it.”
I smiled, typing back: “Thank you, Marcus. Let's reinvest twenty percent into our women's executive mentorship startup fund. I'll be back stateside next month for the annual leadership summit.”
I locked my device, placed it down, and walked to the edge of the stone balcony.
I wore a simple white linen sundress, my dark hair flowing freely in the warm coastal breeze. There were no secret betrayals to uncover, no manipulative partners to manage, no toxic compromises to accept.
I had conquered my life not by shrinking from deceit, but by standing my ground, trusting my own expertise, and walking away from anyone who failed to recognize my value.
The woman who had stood in a crowded airport terminal holding her rolling suitcase while her fiancé told her to sit by the lavatories was a lifetime away. In her place stood Annalise Vance—sovereign, unbreakable, and entirely free.
I raised a glass toward the horizon, making a silent toast to the journey that brought me here.

He thought he could trade me down for a younger intern and a stolen seat.
Instead, he walked straight into a trap of his own making—and I stepped out into the brightest, most brilliant horizon of my life.
