Chapter 2 - The Chopper on the Roof

The deep, rhythmic thrumming of twin turbine engines shook the reinforced glass windows of the Shaker Heights mansion.
Mrs. Gladys, the longtime housekeeper who had watched in quiet agony as Spencer systematically broke Phoebe’s spirit, hurried up the grand staircase. She stopped outside Phoebe’s bedroom door just as it swung open.
Gladys gasped softly. Phoebe was no longer wearing the faded navy-blue dress. She stood tall in a tailored charcoal-gray Gucci pantsuit, her hair swept up into a sleek, commanding chignon, a diamond-encrusted Cartier tank watch glinting coldly on her wrist. She carried a leather overnight bag, her expression an impenetrable mask of absolute authority.
“Ma’am... what is happening?” Gladys stammered, wringing her hands together. “There’s a massive helicopter landing on the back lawn! The neighbors will call the police!”
“Let them call,” Phoebe said smoothly, stepping past her toward the hallway. She paused, turning back to look at the older woman who had shown her kindness when no one else would. “Gladys, pack your things. You’re leaving this house with me tonight. You’ll never have to bow to Spencer Conway again.”
“Where are we going, Miss Phoebe?” Gladys asked, her eyes widening as the reality of the young woman’s demeanor finally pierced through her confusion.
“We’re going to a party,” Phoebe replied with a chilling, beautiful smile. “And I promise you, Gladys, it’s going to be the most expensive show Cleveland has ever seen.”
Outside, the lawn was flattened by the hurricane-force downdraft of a matte-black AgustaWestland helicopter bearing the unmistakable gold crest of Harrell Global Industries. The cabin door slid open, and a towering man in a bespoke federal-grade security suit stepped down, saluting sharply as Phoebe approached.
“Welcome back, Ms. Harrell,” the chief of security said over the deafening roar of the blades. “Your father’s legal team is already en route to the Apex Group gala. All lines of credit extended to Spencer Conway have been frozen effective immediately.”
Phoebe climbed into the leather-lined cabin, Gladys trembling slightly beside her. As the aircraft lifted off the ground, ascending rapidly into the stormy Cleveland night, Phoebe looked down through the reinforced window. The sprawling Shaker Heights mansion looked impossibly small—a tiny, insignificant box where she had wasted three years of her life playing a game she was never meant to lose.
“Pilot,” Phoebe commanded over the internal intercom. “Set a direct course for the skyline. Take us straight to the top of the Apex Tower.”
“Affirmative, Ms. Harrell,” the pilot responded.

Inside the cabin, Phoebe opened her leather portfolio. She pulled out a thick stack of corporate documents—the original collateral agreements, debt-to-equity notes, and default triggers that her father’s holding company had quietly inserted into every major expansion deal Spencer Conway had signed over the last thirty-six months. Spencer believed his success was a testament to his own genius. He never knew that every single brick of his tower was built on foundations owned outright by the Harrell family.
And tonight, Phoebe was going to pull out the cornerstone.
