Chapter 2 - Pearls Before SwineThe Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Imperial was a symphony of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and whispered ambitions. Hundreds of the city’s wealthiest executives, politicians, and socialites mingled beneath soaring vaulted ceilings, their laughter and applause forming a steady, hypnotic hum.

At Table Four—right in the VIP section, directly facing the grand dais—Blake Vance adjusted his tuxedo cuffs with an air of practiced nonchalance.

"Make sure you stay close when the chairwoman is announced," Blake murmured to Sloane, who was busy reapplying her crimson lipstick while surveying the room with predatory satisfaction. "Rumor has it she’s looking to expand her eastern portfolio. If I can lock down a five-minute conversation before the keynote speech, Winslow Development will secure the waterfront contract by midnight."

"Don't worry, darling," Sloane purred, sliding her hand over his sleeve. "With you leading the presentation and me managing the media rollout, no one else in this room even stands a chance. Besides, look at the competition. Half these people are old money resting on dead ancestors' names."

Eleanor Vance, sitting beside them with her chin held high, nodded in haughty agreement. "Quite right, Sloane dear. Not like that little nobody Blake left at home tonight. Can you imagine bringing Catherine to an event like this? She’d probably try to strike up a conversation with the catering staff about coupon clipping."

Chloe snickered, swirling her champagne flute. "Mother, don't be cruel. Catherine has her uses. Someone has to wash the dishes and keep the dust off the Persian rugs."

Blake smiled faintly at the family joke, feeling an absolute surge of invincibility. Life was falling into place precisely as he had orchestrated it. He had a thriving empire, a stunning and ambitious vice president who shared his ruthless vision of success, a mother and sister who validated his superiority, and an obedient, invisible wife safely tucked away at home scrubbing the kitchen floor.

Across the room, the low murmur of the ballroom suddenly shifted. A ripple of sharp attention swept through the crowd like a wave parting before a ship.

On the elevated stage, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium, tapping the microphone. A hush fell over the room so profound that the ice melting in crystal buckets sounded like falling pebbles.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC’s voice boomed through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Tonight, the board of Fairchild Capital and the executive committee of Winslow Development are deeply honored to announce a historic transition. For eight years, our operations have flourished under private guidance. Tonight, for the first time in history, the sole controlling chairwoman and majority stakeholder of our global portfolio has chosen to grace us with her presence."

Blake straightened his spine, his heart hammering against his ribs with fierce excitement. This is it, he thought. The moment that changes everything.

"Please join me in welcoming," the MC paused for dramatic effect, "the founder and guiding force behind Fairchild Capital... Madam Catherine Fairchild."

The spotlight swung away from the podium, cutting a brilliant beam of white light across the polished marble floor directly toward the private side entrance reserved for the venue's ultimate VIPs.

Blake started to stand up, smoothing his jacket, a confident, winning smile plastered across his face, ready to lead the applause for the visionary leader he intended to conquer.

Beside him, Sloane adjusted her diamond necklace, leaning forward with breathless anticipation.

The heavy velvet curtains at the private entrance parted.

Step by measured step, a woman walked into the spotlight.

She wore a breathtaking midnight-blue velvet gown that shimmered with subtle silver constellations. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, modern twist, held by a diamond pin that caught every ray of light in the room. Her posture was absolute perfection—graceful, commanding, and utterly effortless.

As she stepped fully into the brilliant glare of the spotlight, the breath left Blake’s lungs as if he had been punched in the stomach.

The smile froze on his face.

His jaw went slack.

He blinked hard, convinced the champagne or sheer exhaustion was playing a cruel, hallucinatory trick on his brain.

Because the woman walking toward the dais—the multi-billion-dollar titan, the anonymous chairwoman everyone in the room had spent months trying to court, the owner of Winslow Development, the mansion, and every single cent Blake possessed—wasn’t a glamorous stranger.

It was his wife.
