Chapter 7 - The Unbroken HorizonTwo weeks later, the autumn air in the state capital was crisp, clear, and filled with the scent of falling leaves and absolute freedom.

The federal courthouse steps were crowded with journalists and camera crews broadcasting the indictment of Jonah Vance and his co-conspirators on federal RICO, human trafficking, and corruption charges. Legal analysts predicted multiple consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. My mother faced lesser charges for aiding and abetting a felon, her social circle evaporating like morning mist as her former friends distanced themselves from the scandal.
But none of that mattered to me as I unlocked the front door of my newly renovated, fully accessible ground-floor apartment in the heart of the capital.
Chloe pushed her way inside across the smooth hardwood floors, walking with the aid of a brand-new, lightweight carbon-fiber forearm crutch set that allowed her to move with grace and confidence.
She stopped in the center of the sunlit living room, taking a deep, relaxed breath as she looked out through the wide bay windows overlooking a quiet, tree-lined park.
“You know, Maya,” Chloe said, a bright, genuine smile touching her lips—a smile completely free of fear or shadow— “this place is awfully quiet.”
I set her luggage down by the entryway, walking over to wrap my arms gently around her shoulders. “Quiet is good, Chlo. Quiet means safe.”
“And Mom?” Chloe asked softly, her expression turning somber. “Has she... has she called?”
I shook my head gently. “Her lawyers called. She’s selling the estate to cover her legal defense fund. She's finally realizing that the life she chose was built on sand.”
Chloe nodded slowly, placing her hand over mine. She didn't cry. The healing process was long, but every day the weight grew a little bit lighter.

“Good,” Chloe whispered, turning to look up at me with eyes full of fierce, unbreakable love. “Because we don’t need her house anymore. We have each other.”
I smiled back, pressing a kiss to the top of her head as the afternoon sun flooded the room with golden light. The storm had finally passed, and the horizon ahead was wide, bright, and completely unbroken.
